That was a very informative site Matt and the diagrams were nice

Well I got to make a vortex tube but unfortunately I did not have any specs on actual dimensions so I tried to wing it. The best I got was about 85 degrees off the hot end and 20 degrees on the cold side
Of course that is better than nothing but a long way from -40
As Murphy's law would have it as soon as I got home and did more web searches for specs I was able to find some and figured out how to scale to the size I need. My dimensions were not too far off but what was fugg'n me was the size of the inlet tube.

I sprayed more with the gun for the fun of it but since I was not where I wanted with the vortex tube I did not try to implement it.
This was a sorta slow week (only 6 items) so with the extra days off I was able to get a lot done around the shop.
I made a tool for adjusting something in a Dodge rearend for another tennant where my shop is at. He has a market to sell them so he wants me to make a bunch up. Other than that though I have the whole week to devote to just the spray project

One thing I only have a thermometer that goes down to 0 degrees so I need to figure out where to find a sub-zero.

Nope. The weather got cold and I am resting a little. But only by comparison. Just not as much at it as usual. Still playing with vortex tubes. I think keeping the temps on the electrodes as low as possible in the end will be the silver bullet on this.

naw just flow some of that niffty liquid nitrogen round them glowsticks

if you use vortex tubes to make this work, I will promise to buy you a beer or few when I come up to shake your hand and see this thing in action

are you using the lathe for the spirl in the vortex. what are you using for it? aluminum or plastic, or oak :P

keep up the good work champ,
you get a little wet up there in the last weeks? swamped here, I lost my forge to that damn rain, was doing a fire and looked outside, huge downpour, man there was molten aluminum flying out of the crucible, exploding firebricks and all kinds of bad stuff, oh well, make it bigger, hotter and nastier

That sucks that your forge bit the dust, or mud I guess in this case. Yep you got the right idea on making the next one bigger and better. Now that you got a little experience with it under your belt you probably have a better game plan on how to do the next one.
In the end sometimes that works out better. You get motivated to build that better idea sometimes whereas you kind of procrastinate otherwise.

I made the spirals with copper pipe. I just cut them to about a half inch wide and cut a slit so I could roll it into a spiral. That was a lot more simple and just as effective. The copper spiral tries to expand so it stays in place real well.
My wife's birthday was yesterday (42) so I went looking to trade her in for two 21 year olds Haha! But that took me out of last night and tonight she talked me into hanging out again.

Well I had to do my scrapyard run today and that was another good one I sure hope you guys are checking your scrapyards Today I found a Lincoln LN-25 wirefeeder! It is beat to hell but these things are very high dollar units. They are made so you can have MIG off a stick welder up to 500 amps. So that is serious running. This one had a couple of the premium options, a gas solenoid and a contactor which turns the power on and off at the gun when you pull the trigger.
How this little jewel plays in to this project is that it is already setup for a 1/16 wire and I am pulling the drive unit out of it and selling the carcass as a parts unit on Ebay.
I can make a speed controller for the 24v DC motor and make a reel bracket for the wire spool.
This way I can stand-alone feeder for the spray system and not have to dick with my feeder I have to use for welding So that will save me some headache.

Look here to see what a good one sells for on Ebay (note the price on the one with the contactor)

Scalli just lucky
I put an auction up for the rest of the parts so we can see how it will do. A new contactor goes for a little over $400 new so this has potential. I bet I at least get my money back It cost me about $8

The funny thing is that it is not just one scrapyard, it is several. If you have ever seen some of the people that haul stuff to the scrapyards it is not surprising that they would dump off something like that. I am sure there are situation where shops are shut down or some company buys another company and wants to upgrade all the equipment and dumps off any antiquated equipment.

Ultimately anything that ends up in the hands of scrap haulers a lot of them are poorly educated and many are just a couple of notches above a homeless person. I don't want that to come across as sounding mean or anything but that is a lot of the things I see there.
I just really find it odd that you guys don't find anything unless you are not going to any of them. Sometimes I just go for the hell of it. If I find some clean, new looking angle iron or tubing I will grab it because I know I will find a use for it sooner or later and it is cheap enough that it is not going to hurt the checkbook. And a lot of the time I run into cool stuff as you guys know.

Last week there was a Miller CP-300 that looked like it was in really good shape before they dropped some weird thing made out of I-beam on it Timing is everything.

Here is the latest; I have a really nice vortex tube cooled electrode holder. I have to make a entirely new head to do this so it will be some time.
I drilled a hole in a simulated electrode so I could put the thermometer inside and tune it to the lowest temp.
The best I got was -13.3F @ 120psi. The funny thing is that this is not running that much CFM so I could go to a larger vortex tube and drop it a lot more if need be.
I have to make parts for eBay sales and go to a Christmas party tonight but I will get this in a gun soon.
For fun I took a non cooled copper electrode and hit it with the MIG and as expected it just blew it to **** quick. Then I ran it against the chilled copper electrode and it was holding up fine.
Now once everything is confined to the inside of a gun that could change but it looks good so far.

BTW, the wire feeder from the scrapyard went for $203.50 without the drive motor

Damn I got too great a day job for that Plus I would not have to travel beyond this area. Just keep making laps and hit them all about 2 times a day.
But if I was a college kid I would have this type setup;
Rent a small storage building somewhere near where I lived that had 24/7 access. Have a good digital camera and a beater pickup. And make or buy or "find" some shelving to sort items.
Keep the **** you can't carry into the apartment in the storage building. Take pics and write down as much info as possible.
Check to see what similar items have closed for on eBay and note the category the items did best under. Post the auction with the info you have.
USPS has free packaging materials (boxes) and you can find and store larger boxes as you find them. Plus you can buy the contents of abandoned storage buildings and post that. Take anything like clothing or other common non-eBay type items you don't want to Salvation Army type places. Get a tax receipt on those if you want. It would be a great way to set your own hours and schedule and stash a little cash on the side as well.

Just read all 50 pages... needless to say it took me a while! It's like reading one of those interactive storybooks. Just the plot is much more interesting, even my girlfriend was asking what the characters were talking about LOL!! Hows the project comming along? I work with a guy in the UK (timrxmotors) that has literealy 1000's of old rotor housings, we were joking about making a house out of them, he thought it would be the best way to make money out of them without scrapping them. I know he's giving JHB's cermetA a run in the new year on his 12aT race motor. So he maybe a good candidate for comparing the 2 coatings?

I have not touched it since we started looking into getting the new shop. We are trying to make up extra parts to fill orders whle we move once that day comes.
The move will be difficult enough so if all I have to do is get stuff in packages and ship during that time I will be much happier.
We will know something really soon.

It is a 9000sf hangar that already has 3 phase electric. An 800sf office and state of the art security system. It belongs to a guy that had a Nascar Craftman Truck Series team, hence the trucks still there.
Here is a link to the thread all about it. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...3&page=1&pp=15
