Rebuild, whos seals?
I'm pulling my motor this week to have it rebuilt by a Mazda rotary specialist. I'm sure he will know what seals would be best for my application but I just wanted to get some 2nd opinions before I went to him. I did a quick search but found very little info specific to what seals were best for longevity in a medium performance street motor.
This is for my 94' FD that had an apex seal let go on the rear housing. I dont plan to go beyond the stock twins or 300rwhp at around 12psi of boost; so my power demands arent too high. I know there are several companies that make the differant seals and gaskets for the motor, I'm just wondering what I should use.
I think 2mm seals will be more than adequate for my goals without sacrificing the extra housing wear the 3mm seals induce. Should I use Mazda's new 2-piece, Rotary Aviations seals, Atkins 2-piece or something else even?
Pineapple racing said they use upgraded coolant seals that are much more durable than the OE replacements but I didnt get a followup on what the actual improvements were. Atkins Rotary website mentions upgraded all-viton seals but I've also read on here that the solid viton seals do not fit as well as the OE silicone/viton ones, any truth to this?
Thank you,
~Kris

Are you replacing both housings? If you're keeping the front housing (assuming it's in good enough condition to be reused) stick with the original type of seal (assuming OEM here). If you switch to Atkins on housings that were exposed to Mazda OEM 3-piece initially, the wear pattern is different vs. the Atkins and as such, the latter won't seal as well as it should or would on new housings. IMHO, stick with the Mazda seals.

I was told by a certain n/a drag racer out of Florida that it's particular to the Atkins 2-piece seals and that it allows blowby at cruise. Pressure equalizes under boost however. I went with Atkins in my motor on used rotor housings and had this issue. You can actually hear it when holding the engine at a certain rpm.
