Rear differential half shaft alignment

For you rear end junkies i have a good question.

If you have a an independant rear(like the rx7 and vette) you're installing on say a custom or kit car.Does the differential have to be perfectly aligned with the wheels through the halfshafts?Or can the rear be a few inches rearward without hurting anything?Like traction problems, halfshaft wobbling, vibrations.unbalanced rear?

thanx

porsche did it when they lengthened the wheelbase on the 911 in 69. you just want to be careful the more offset you get the more stress you're going to put on the joint.
