Question Race Clearancing

Can someone shed some light on the subject ? , what exactly is it , how is it done , by whome and how much ? .
Also I am going to be running a half bridged 13brew with stock internals , T66 -T70 compressor wheel (?) ,1.15tang. A/R with P trim turbine wheel at 18-25 psi boost and a rpm limit set at 8500 - 9000 hoping to make about 500+ rwhp , do I need to do this modification also ?

Hey Marcell,
I've been chasing this for about 6 months. Best reference I've found is the Racing Beat catalog, but even that does not provide enough information to give instructions to a machinist. Maybe one of the engine builders will chime in, or if someone has some irons that have been damaged - that would provide some insight as to what needs to be removed.

We've all read that the "high rpm mods" (includes: balancing, rotor clearancing, hardened stationary gears, 3-window stationary gear bearings, secured rotor bearings, additional oiling, and probably some things I'm forgetting) are suggested/required for, " regular /continious operation above 8500..." But, I can't remember a post where someone seized a bearing, or locked a motor, because a bearing "walked out", or a rotor hit a side plate... So, maybe we need to nail-down what "continious high-rpm operation" means in terms of RPM's, time, etc...

I've been wondering if these mod's were originally developed for the NA race motors - see the mazdatrix roadracing movies - where they regularly exceed 9k, and hold it there, and hold it there, and hold it there... I could see a bearing walking out, or other sh_t moving around in ways the Mazda engineers never inteneded, under those circumstances.

I also wonder if a well-balanced rotating assembley wont mitigate many of these problems - at least for a couple thousand RPM's (maye up to 10k?)

Anyway, sorry for the book. I want to know about this too. Hope we get some good info.

Steve C.

Actually the engine in the Mazdatrix race movies never sees over 8500 due to the rules-mandated 100% stock internals. In fact the one time they had no power in 4th gear they had to wind the engine out to 8800 in one race, and the engine refused to re-start once the race was over...
