Porting or ECU

Porting or ECU

I have a question regarding porting, first off I am considering getting a street port with my rebuild but for the price ($500) i could also afford a used power FC, so I was wondering whether it would be more worth it to get the ecu, I was also wondering if with a port I need to get an ecu aswell

Port cause your already in there but ur gonna have to get ecu also. Its all or nothing in this case

I would leave the stock ports, and get the ecu.

I run a single turbo GT3574R, and mine has a small street port from the previous owner. If I had the choice, I would just leave it stock. I think that gives you the most reliability out of the housing and seal, no issues should happen with a stock port and seal wear.

Just my opinion. I don't see the stock ports limiting me with my mid 300 to low 400WHP car.

I'm shooting for 350-400 whp and I've heard around that power mark that a minor street port will improve reliability, if this is not the case, what would you recommend for mods instead?

I think 350 to 400WHP goal is a good goal. Your drivetrain can support that.

If you are trying to run this amount, you probably want to go a single turbo route to get there.

I would run the following mods.

I would run a new stock OEM engine basically, seals, etc. I would run viton water gaskets. I would probably keep all the ports stock.

This is basically just an engine refresh. I would then focus on cooling the engine, and removing the carbon source into the engine, another rough spot is increased air intake temps. Keep these all in check and you should do well with the motor.

Larger intercooler (doesn't have to be huge, just a nice upgraded one, 15"x10"x3.25" ish core size)
Run a larger radiator in V-mount configuration. brackets are easy to make.

You might want to run a hood with some vent in it to let all this hot air out. Make sure to duct it all very well.

Dual oil coolers, ducted, or a single cooler that is larger in size and duct it well.

Metal air seperation tank.

run BUR9EQP plugs all around (good to about 400WHP), very streetable as well.
HKS Twin power

You will need more fuel, 550CC EV14 primary injectors or 650CC with 2000CC secondaries EV14.

Aeromotive A1000-6 Fuel pressure regulator.
CJ motorsports FPR holder
make the lines yourself I can get you a list of fittings if you are serious.
Supra fuel pump.
full function engineering rails

PowerFC

full 3" exhaust
Large intake filter (low pressure drop).

Run a catch can to oil filler neck, multiple ways to do this set up.

run 2 cycle oil through the OMP (need adapter), and premix a little.

Find a turbo that can make the power you want with low boost pressure, EFR8374, GT35R, Precision 6266 or equiv.

This would be a pretty stout set up.

Other little things you might need is an idler pulley (pineapple racing), remedy water pump, new clutch if you have stock, etc).

You can get 300-320WHP with the stock twins and really not need a lot of these mods. I just tuned a car in this power range, he just needs to upgrade his intercooler. He has a supra pump, intake, full exhaust, twin power, and powerFC.

He does have port work, but I think that increased his lag some, car makes great top end power.

I just don't think the porting is really needed, Just MO.

Thanks for the advice man. I would love it if you could pm me a list of the fuel line fittings the you were talking about when you get the chance

Porting is not really required to increase power on a forced induction rotary. To increase power you need to increase the air and fuel that the engine sees, to increase the air on a turbo car you just increase the boost (within reason of what your turbo can flow). Porting will net you an increase in hp for the same boost level, but it will also change the power and where you're seeing that power, essentially trading a slight increase in power for a decrease in useable power.

I know people who are reliably running 600whp+ on stock ports (obviously with a single setup) all day long. Tuning, a COMPETENT ecu, and good wiring matter far more than the ports (unless your ports are SUPER fucked up, then its a different story ) when it comes to making reliable power.

If your long term ambitions end below 400whp than a PFC should be fine, for anything else I wouldn't even waste your time/money on that ecu though.
