Ported or not?

I just bought an '84 GS, the engine has been stripped down to just the alternator, no PS, no Air Pump or other Emissions Control stuff, no AC, etc. The exhaust has been trimmed down too to a header and on silencer then one of those big coffee can mufflers on the end with no silencer. Needless to say, it loud and very snappy.

The question is, when it idles, the engine lopes like a big V-8 with a cam. Could this be an indication that the engine was ported or just some other anomaly? It sounds pretty good, regardless, just a little loud without the silencer in the muffler tip.

lope is not enough to say if it's ported or not. could be anything from a vacuum leak to a poorly tuned carb, bad ignition, bad timing ... you get the picture. you can check the intake and exhaust ports if you have stock pieces to compare them to, but other than that you'll have to wait until you tear it apart.

lean it out and see what it does. they'll lope if they're too rich at idle.
