oil cooler mounting

it would be beneficial for me if i could mount my oil cooler such that the plates ran vertical rather than horizontal.

does anyone see a reason why this would adversely effect the operation of the oil cooler?

i can't think of one, but that doens't mean that there isn't one. just though i'd check before i go off buying parts to accomodate a setup that won't work well.

thanks
ryan

A long as air can pass through the oil cooler it should be ok. (you don't mean the cooler will be horizontal, facing the ground do you?)

no, i'm pretty sure you understood what i was trying to say correctly.

i meant that if you were looking at the stock fd oil coolers, from the front of the car, and then rotated them 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise.

i figured it wouldn't make any real difference performance-wise, i just figured i'd ask so i didn't overlook something. only reason i questioned it was that every car i've seen ever has them mounted in the other (horizontal) way, and i thought there might be some reason behind it.

thanks for your input man, i appreciate it

Over the years, I have tried several different oil cooler and plumbing configurations. The only problem with having part of the cooler up high is that gravity will want to drain the cooler empty when the motor is shut down. Having an Accusump pre-oiler solves that problem.

I tried, but I couldn't find a way of installing them, without doing a lot of customization, on any case I mounted the second oil cooler behind the fiber glass\plastic bumper, the bumper needs some trimming, and you will need to cut a hole a on the bumper cover. I haven't had time to connect the lines from the second oil cooler to the engine, however with the hole on the bumper cover, oil temps have improved some (5-10F).

Will try to get some pics during the weekend.

Oil Cooooooler

The factory shows in their 79/85 comp hand book to do just that as the best location. The cooler is shown laying flat in front of the rad, down between the frame rails.
