Talking New Guy needs quality advice!!

This will be kinda long so bear with me.

This is my deal. I have started a VW beetle project and when going through engine options I came across the silly rotary motor idea. Turns out , these sily things are very compact and can crank out tons of power. I instantly fell in love with the idea.

This is where the problem comes in. I am more of a carburated piston guy. I never really cared for fuel injection in big Mopar 440's, and the thought of running a carburated blow-through rotary system, where one good PING can end my motor, does not sound good to me. So I decided to keep the fuel injection and stay on the safe computerized side of things(kind of). My motor choice is a low mileage 86-91 Turbo (Is this a TURBO II?) with all the stock wiring, injectors and accesories.

I am only looking for 325-375 hp at the flywheel (I know these are capable of 650+hp) due to the limitations of the VW Drivetrain. Now I have tried to do my own research but there is simply too much to take in and discover.

I need to know what combination of parts can get me to this level from stock. Internal mods?(I hope none) Turbo? Computer upgrades? Injectors? Fuel pump(can't use an in-tank? and anything else I havn't mentioned. Keep in mind I don't want or need emmissions devices. What would a good street port do for me?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! In the meantime I will continue to play catch-up in the rotary game.
Thanks Again!

Welcome to the rotary world.....aka the dark side....
There are a few guys that still prefer the blow through setup for the ease of tuning. It is very much doable. Yes that is a Turbo II (87-91). If your going to use the EFI, are going to use stock setup or a stand alone system. The stock system with a good piggy-back (greddy e-manage) should get you there. A stand alone theres a wide range to choose from (microtec, haltech etc...)
For turbo, a 60-1 will do the job. I would also recommend getting the motor ported. There is a lot that can be done it all depends on how crazy you want to get and how big your budget is. Im sure the other guys here will chime in and add their info. Good luck with it.

As far as the EFI is concerned, that is one of the things that I was particularly curious about.

Considering I have no need for any of the emmissions equipment and that the stock ECU I assume was programed for all this stuff. What would be best a stock ECU W/piggy-back or a stand alone computer.
Thanks for the reply!

piggy-backs are bandaids. get a standalone, especially if you're building a drag car.

there are many options available. The Haltech E6K/E6X is a good option. Microtech is a lesser known company but they make the LT series. Of course if you want to spend even more money you certainly can

You can go to the Engine Management section of this forum to get more information.

Will you be tuning the engine yourself, or will you be hiring a rotary tuner to tune? The general consensus is to go with the EMS that your tuner recommends.

Right On!!
Thanks for all your help. Keep it comin. Looks like I will be tuning myself , know of no one in the ABQ area that works RX-7s.(except MAZDA).

I talked to a guy at MAZDATRIX and he recommended getting the stock J-SPEC motor running good and tuned with a stand alone then move up to T04 turbo (which T04? or would the 60-1 be better for my app?). Then from there go with a larger secondary injector(from where? What size?). He said this would put me in the ballpark or 350 flywheel hp. Oh yeah all this with a good street port. What do y'all think?

Oh any good fuel pump recomendations for an out of tank fuel pump? Will be using a fuel cell.

Thanks Again
