Need dimensions for late 80's 13B motor/5 speed manual transmission
Hi Everyone,
New to the site and looking for some information that I could not find on the internet despite lots of Google time searching!
I'm in the process of getting an engine swap together to put a normally-aspirated late-80's 13B engine and 5-speed trans into a 1981 Fiat Spider. While we know that fitment of the motor isn't an issue, we are concerned about the overall length of the entire assembly, as well as the orientation of the shifter in the cockpit. So, we need the following dimensions before we pull the trigger on a motor and trans:
Overall combined length of motor and transmission from front of the accessories to the output shaft of the transmission.
Length of the motor, front of the accessories to the back of the flywheel
Length of the transmission from front of the bellhousing to the middle of the shifter while in the neutral, centered position.
Diameter of the front of the transmission bellhousing
Even if you have or can measure only some of these dimensions, you'll be doing a great service in helping to get this swap on the road.
attached pic is from the Rx7 competition book, so its comparing the Rx3 setup and the 79-80 Rx7 setup. for 1981 the shifter moves backwards, although its on its own housing, so you can put it where you need it.
it will be a tight fit in the Fiat, the Fiat engine is really narrow and the rotary is basically a cube. i think there was one that popped up for sale, so its possible, and its been done

Thank you....This is exactly what we're looking for.
Question: When you say the shifter can be moved wherever it's needed, is it a cable shifter, or are there multiple mounting points on the transmission?

the 1981+ shifter is in a housing, it uses a rod. the rod is straight, so in theory you can make it any length you want. the housing does have 4 bolts, and to use the 1981+ trans in an early car you just move it forward to the next set of holes (and cut the rod)
its some work, but for stuff like a Fiat swap its nice to have that flexibility.
