midpipe or converter? that is the question.

California has some of the tuffest emissions laws anywhere. My question
is: How much louder would an FD be without the main cat. It already has 3 in. piping all the way through. how much hp gains would that put
out. Also, will low rpm power be sacrificed significantly or is there more
pro's than con's? I just want to know, would it be worth being possibly
issued a fix-it ticket. Or, should I just say "F**k It" and get it anyways?
Any knowledge or opinions out there?

With midpipe and FD can be quite a bit louder then you would think..some of this has to do with your catback ofcourse...I dont think you want to get caught with a midpipe.. I think the fines could be rather large..Better off going high-flow in california..

Midpipes are insanely loud - especially if you have a hi-flo exhaust (like Apexi N1 or GT) I had one and couldn't stand it - waaaaay too loud. You do sacrifice some low end grunt but after 6K rpms it rips with a midpipe. A hi-flo is about the same (maybe a little louder) if you have dp, and exhaust. Midpipes give you boost creep problems and can be hard to tune for in cold weather. Go with a N-Tech hi flo cat - they are nice cats that flow well.
