manual gearbox
manual gearbox
Has anyone know if this can be done ,i want to put a 3rd gen manual transmission in a 2nd gen car but i want to change the bell housing on the 3rd gen and use the 2nd gen bell housing or if that cant work what about putting the guts from a 3rd gen manual gearbox into a 2nd gen gearbox,Any ideas out there.
I don't know about the later series models, but the Series VI 3Gen has pretty much the same transmission as the Series V 2Gen, including the same gear ratios. I think that the only difference is that the 3Gen transmission will be a pain to mount in your car.
I know of a couple of people running the stock TII transmission with 400HP turbo motors, so I know that it will take a fair amount of torque. If your engine produces more power than that, here are some web links for transmissions that I have recently been considering for my car:

87-88: 3.483 / 2.015 / 1.391 / 1.0 / .762
89-91: 3.483 / 2.015 / 1.391 / 1.0 / .719
93-95: 3.483 / 2.015 / 1.391 / 1.0 / .719
I haven't acutally taken apart the corresponding trannys and counted the teeth, so I guess it could be a typo, or maybe the American-spec cars had different ratios than Aussie-spec or J-spec?
Hmm, here is some more info for this thread... as I look in the catalog, I see that Mazda Comp divides the transmissions into 4 groups:
1) 74-78 Rib Case
2) 79-91 Smooth Case (NA)
3) 87-95 Rib Case (Turbo)
4) PBS MDR-1 Quick-Change Racing Tranny
BTW, the info is from the 97 catalog, as my friend has the current catalog.

Hey Evil Aviator, Im also looking for a nice transmission for my car, it would need, well not really need but would like, to bolt in place of my turbo II trans, i know some custom mounts and bellhousings are necessary, but you know what i mean. I need one that supports something like 600 ft lbs of torque and 800hp at least, i would like to get more but thats like a minimal to make sure the tranny will take plenty of racing abuse. I was hoping to get a seqential clutchless style, any info you have, please let me know.

PS: It's good to see that someone else out there is stupid enough to waste $4,000 - $12,000 USD on a tranny for their REX.
I am pretty sure the TII transmisison is just as strong as a 3rd gne transmisison. There would be no benefit changing, unless you blew your TII one and the 3rd gen one is a super cheap dirt deal.
Most guys running 20B's in 2nd and 1st gens use the TII transmission. Those things put out a lot of torque, and torque is what shreds your transmissions.

Sure, I'll let you know. It looks like you need the same level of transmission that I do. So far I have found that the PBS MDR-1 won't take the torque, so that narrows down the list some.
