lightened rotor's...weighed in!

Here's a set of lightened rotors, done over here in NZ. I was asked a question as to how much they weigh in at, the front 4.23kg, & the rear 4.221kg.

These rotors have come out of a series 4, 13b 6 port, as to the original weight,I am unsure but was hoping some one out there might know. It would be interesting to see a comparsion between the weight's of the rotor's. If any one can help me with this or direct me to a page that can, that would be much appriciated.

So they ended up being 100 grams lighter than a stock 1989 - 1991 13B rotor; not a lot of weight savings, only about 2.5%

My buddy has a set of lightened rotors from Mazda Motorsports. I wish I knew the weight but they have a LOT of material milled out. Half of the "holes" around the bearings are completely milled away as well as much of the face on both sides.

Anyone here running lightened rotors. I remember like 5 yrs ago, some guys were gonna redo a rebuild with them, but don't know if they ever went through with it.

I get these rotors done through a local engineer who does the work for the rotary workshops.

Try CLR Motorsports. They can have the rotors lightened and a bunch of other stuff to them as well. Located in Miami. Here is an image of what they did to Turbo II rotors. Lightened to 93 spec weight. 305.970.1774

Wow.. looks like thay changed the chamber size as well.. with those millings on the rotor face as well.
Obviously lightening, and compression lowering as well... but keeping the "bathtub" area intact for flame control. Very interesting way to both lighten, and lower the compression.....

I think you'll find that the cuts on the rotor face are to change the effective port timing

What did you do about the excessive side seal clearance?

why is that they only machine away the top of the rotor face and not both top and bottom?

think of how that affects the ports, that's why they did it

Bingo. FYI, CLR can do them to the 88-spec n/a rotors which have the higher comp ratio of the 93's but the thicker casting of the S4 TurboII rotors. Carlos still recommends the lower compression rotors.

Nope.. that changes the port timing ZERO.

Unless they cut NEW side seals.. changed to the face of the rotor do Nothing..
The opening of the side.. or peripheral port is ONLY effected (In relation to the rotor) by the passage of any one of the seals.. Side, Apex, or Corner.
NOW... That being said.. bleh.. You might ger a TINY amount of better FLOW into the engine immediately after that port OPENS via the Side seal's passage..
BUT.. That being the case.. the improvement would be beyond minimal... Remember this has to be a forced induction engine.. And well.. I personally dont think it would give much inprovement to your air flow. YES... it MAY give some.. but not much.

Now... if it was N/A... and you were talking a motor that NEEDED that 1HP over the competitor.. well.... Yes. That TINY improvement multiplied by 30 other things you did to make the car faster=Winning front runner.

In a Turbo application... I think the compression lowering is Much more of a factor than the flow increase.... /shrug

Anyhow... Timing.. Nope. Seals control that... Unless they are RE_cut.. then nope.
