JHB "CerMet" coatings and other performance engine building questions...

I know there's been some debate over this subject and some of you guys have strong opinions about this inner rotor housing coating, but I've yet to find feedback from people who've had success or failures with it. I'm building an engine that'll see a maximum of 15psi turbocharged boost pressure only rarely-I'm building for a broad powerband that starts at lower rpms and provides plenty of boosed torque in the mid-range. I won't complicate the question any further by stating any more of the specs to this particular project except for the fact that I'd like to try and keep it as reliable as possible (i.e. hopefully close to 100k miles before a rebuild is in order). Is there anybody here that has had their rotor housings cermet coated, and if so what was the outcome? Good/bad/similar to stock?

It costs almost the same to purchase new rotor housings (for my 6-port SE 13b anyway) as it does to have the Cermet "A" coating applied to your existing housings, but the benefits they describe seem to be worth it to me-I'm just after the opinion of somebody who's had this done and has a lot more experience with rotarys than I. Other advantages are that you can used already ported or pre-port your housings and you'll only have to go back and finish them up (unless they do that for you) after the coating has been applied, you can weld up the internal EGR ports in the exhaust passages before sending them off so you don't have to worry about weld splatter damaging fresh housings, etc. It seems like a viable alternative to buying new rotor housings for me, but I've never had this performed before, let alone even built a rotary engine previously.

I'm also interested in running S5 TII rotors in my SE housings-I'm hoping that the internal trichoidal shape of the later model engines could be copied (only minor differences by thousandths of an inch exist) in my SE housings if I sent them to JHB to get the coating so they'd be a better match for the later model rotors...

Regardless of your opinions on this issue, I'd also like some recommendations on hard and soft seals for this engine. Performance is a priority, but reliability is also important. I don't care to piece together my seals and gasket kits from various sources, manufacturers, and retailers, but I'd like to have the best possible combination for my application. I've got some ideas, but I would love some expert or experienced opinions on the matter.

Everybody has their favorite machinists and specialty companies when it comes to work such as rebalancing a rotary engine's rotating assembly, but is there one company that stands out and consistently produces quality work with regard to "hybrid" engines (lighter and lower compression rotors with an SE eccentric shaft, auto counterweight, and aluminum flywheel and six port irons)? I'd rather send my parts off across the US for top quality work then drive an hour or two to deliver then to have a less-than-favorable job performed. As with anything else, you get what you pay for with these services when they're top notch, but it's added insurance if you receive exactly what you pay for

One more thing about engine internals, this one regarding irons or side plates. Should I look into having my irons re-nitrided after lapping/grinding (which method-lapping or grinding-is better anyway and who performs the most accurate work?), cermet coated, or what? Gas nitriding produces a very hard surface that's very resistant to wear, and I'm looking for long term reliability as well as performance here also...But then again JHB promises the world with their "cermet" coatings...

Thanks to all who contribute their thoughts, ideas, knowledge, help, time, and cooperation. All info is greatly appreciated...

didnt bother to read your post, because i dont really need to know what its about- just do yourself a favour and dont deal with jhb. there are other ceramic coating providers around- i have nothing against running surface coatings, just some of the companies that apply them.

What happened between you and JHB? A bad experience, or have you heard a bad things about them?

yes, and yes again. i had a moderatly bad experience, but i only lost 60$. search the forums, some big name people on here have had multiple-thousands of dollars problems with quality, shipping, or simply just not getting anything back.
