I don't understand how it would make the engine mount easier though. The physical size of it isn't much smaller than a late model cover is it? I've seen those older covers on 3rd gen RX7's too and have always wondered why they do that.

http://www.kenscheepers.com/Car/rx8.html look at the pictures of his front engine mount. A single flat stock aluminum bar across the front is a hell of alot easier to make mounts for and to align the motor than it would be trying to fabricate the 2 separate engine mounts that the 2nd gen and up motors have. Also a lot of the engine transplants are into older datsuns and toyotas, and they have a crossmember in the engine bay. If you try to use the 2nd gen oil pan it simply won't work because the oilpan will run into the crossmember. That's why you also use the early style oilpan because the sump is in the front and allows for clearance.

That's the only reason? I thought there was something more complicated involved? Motor plate is the way to go, I'll end up doing that one of these days.
