Ito's Oil Pan Mod... other applications?

I just got to thinking about this, and thought I'd run the idea by some sane people... since sane people know nothing of rotaries, I thought I'd try here.

In order to get the oil pan to seat better, Ito reccomends dimpling the pan and the mating surface of teh engine, yea?

Well, in the RB catalog, it reccomends to leave the front cover gasket off, and use RTV to slightly bump oil pressure. I asked a couple people who hae tried this trick, and they reported that when they've tried it, a leak has always developed...

Is there any reason NOT to dimple the mating surfaces of the front cover, when not using a gasket, in order to get a stronger seal?

The dimpling of the oil pan wasn't reccomended to get the pan to seat better. The idea is that it will keep the silicone applied from being squeezed out when tighting the pan bolts. Did you mean seal? The T and L are pretty far away from each other on the keyboard. haha.

What Racing Beat recommends does not bump oil pressure up it is when you do raise oil pressure above factory you leave the front gasket off so that the o-ring between the front cover and front plate does not slip out. Oil pressures of 100psi+ can sometimes cause a blowout to that o-ring when using the gasket it is a preventive measure that you don't use the gasket. I've never had a problem with it leaking without the the gasket all I do is clean it up very good and put a decent amount of RTV red high temp sealant on both surfaces let it get tacky a couple minutes before you mate the two surfaces. I also premix so I plug the hole that feeds the MOP and that's it. If you do use the MOP I could see how it would leak.

Has Steve got pictures of it up on the website yet, or anyone else that has it on for the matter?

so get the reinforcement, and use red RTV (or black?) with no gasket? My car sees 100psi+ pressures, and I have an oil leak, not what part of the pan it's coming from, maybe the bolts?

My buddy that has a lowered truck on air bags uses a enginge driven compressor for air. It is basically a 10 cubic inch two cylinder (old style ac unit) with over head valves and so on. anyway the "head gasket" so to speak, tore and we couldnt use it. So we got some of that copperish colored rtv and let it sit to "skin" as per the directions then let it sit over 24 hours just to make sure and its holding who knows how much psi. Its got a pretty long strock so id imagine the psi gets up there and it also gets to hot to touch sometimes. So my recomendation is the high temp copperish colored rtv.

I've used the copper to handle the heat of blockoff plates for EGR's and it seems to work pretty good.
