Instrumentation

I am just putting the finishing touches on my build and got thinking about the ideal instrumentation for a high performance vehicle.

Current configuration:
EMAP (single channel, reading one runner in turbo manifold)
EGT (dual channel, reading both runners in turbo manifold)
Wideband O2 (single channel, in downpipe *no cat*)
Knock sensors (dual channel, on rotor housings)
Turbo shaft speed
IAT (thermocouple sensor, in UIM)
MAP (onboard ECU)
Fuel pressure (remote mount motorsport transducer)
Fuel temp (on rail)
Oil pressure (remote mount motorsport transducer)
Oil temp (in block)
Coolant temp (in block)

My ECU will support more inputs, would anything else be suggested? Superior locations for sensors?
I feel I am walking a fine line between perfection and unnecessary additions. Should I add a secondary coolant temp sensor in the water pump housing?

Part of me would be interested in differential pressures and temperatures but I cant imagine these add any functional advantages beyond satisfying my own curiosity.
Interested in your opinions!

Cheers,
Alex

Personally, I'd have all that you listed as inputs for the ECU to utilize/log. But as for actual data displayed to the driver.. I'd keep it simple and basic, too much extra data will be more distraction than benefit imo.

MAP, WBO2, Oil Temp/Pressure, Water Temp, maybe IAT. That's all I'd be wanting to see (full time) based on what you listed. Log the rest and use it to feed protection strategies.

I agree I don't want to be watching half of those sensors while driving, but it would be nice to have if the ECU can log and also trigger failsafes if values go outside safe ranges. I've also thought about adding Crankcase pressure and Coolant pressure sensors for datalogging engine health on my car.

a wonderful subject. i am planning a section on my site re Instrumentation as well as a thread on our board.

you really can't have too much instrumentation and our 21st century ECUs can easily log it all. i agree w Fendamonkey as to the display side of things. ideally you want to be looking out the front windshield. i have an analog boost gauge on my A pillar, an AFRj module just behind my steering wheel. i have a DisplayLink on my dash which can call up most of my sensors but i generally don't look at it. often when i am road tuning i have my laptop sitting on my pass seat. after a run i do a pretty good dive into the data.

i am delighted that you will be using a proper IAT sensor 1badFB. i started a new thread in the AI Section entitled "AI 2022 refresh."

if you note the IAT graph (post 3) and my comments (post 5) it should be quite clear that there is only one choice re IATs. IMO, IATs may be as important as any sensor onboard.

Scotty305, love the concept of crankcase pressure.

Thanks for the feedback, gentleman!

My car used to have every possible gauge splayed out across the dash and in the center console. Looked "cool" but if anything had happened during an exciting drive, I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed. I am in total agreement on the subject of displays!

With the refresh, I have removed everything and my only gauge/display will be a Haltech iC-7. Haven't yet decided how to configure the dash itself, but I should have clarified in the first post that my thoughts were directed at instrumentation for the ECU only.

It's a pleasure to see Mr. Coleman dropping in! I always appreciate your data filled posts and easy to understand breakdowns. Your info (without question) has steered my build in a better direction. I definitely took notes, so once everything is complete; I hope that the teacher is proud, haha.
