ignition timing for street ported motors

okay, i have been searching the hell out of this. i thought i had made a post on this already, but i must be drinking to much lately. anyways, im about to be doing a radical streetport on my FD. im wondering if there is any kind of a "rule of thumb" on how the ignition timing should be set up. im reading that it should be retarded some but how much? what are the desired egt readings? i know that there is gonna be somebody wanting to see my ports. . . i dont have any pics right now. i just wanna know what the basic theory is behind ignition timing on a ported engine.

thanks,
paul
