I Went With Three MSDs

Kevin Wyum installed my three MSD 6As this last weekend. This weekend I'm going to Green Bay, WI where Steven Kan will be tuning five cars. Mine will be one of the lucky five. Maybe my car will finally be tuned to its potential. I'll be running B105EVG trailing and B11EVG leading plugs. WI is not working yet. They have no racing gas there so I'll be hauling about 20 gallons of 110 octane unleaded in 5-gallon cans.

Nice location for street tuning. The host is in a remote area and he has about 1.5 mile level straight with nothing on either side of the road. I'll be able to finally get all kinds of performance data using my Vericom computer. I will also do some Racelogic traction control tests.

I pray the weather holds up. Temps should be in the low 60s.

Ken

What did you use to attach that MSD to the side of the battery like that? Is it being held in place with any form of bracket or 2 sided tape or what???

BTW - I think you'll like having Steve tune your car lol

Thanks,
STEPHEN

15psi pump gas - 20+psi race gas at whatever octane Kan tells me. I can get 110 octane unleaded for $2.89 a gallon. I'll be bringing 20 gallons in 5-gallon cans out there with me. It's a 320 mile one way trip. I'll got out with 95 octane and should have a couple of gallons left for tuning at 15psi and then dump in 110 octane for the high boost tuning.

I'll do some Vericom runs before tuning and then after to see what he accomplished.

I'll also get some launch timing with traction control on and off to see the differences.

They are jammed in there so tight I don't need anything else. The battery case is 1/4" from the engine pulley. Neat install they run cool and there is a little air vent for cool air from the IC intake for the two MSDs. I also have two IC cooling fans. 295CFM 2.5 amp. One a pull and one a push.

BTW - I think you'll like having Steve tune your car lol

Thanks,
STEPHEN
What do you mean by that comment?

I have a Mobil station open 24 hours a day with special fuels and one pump has Phillips 110 octane unleaded racing gas. It's 7 miles from my home.

Kinda nice.

I think it's the "lol" that has his attention, it definately caught mine. Usually when you follow a comment with "lol" you are indicating the comment was a joke.
I take it that Steve did tune the car well and that was not how it was meant though?

Oh Gosh no, I didnt mean anything bad with the "LOL" comment. Steve is a great tuner!!!! I was just saying Steve is a great tuner and you'll like him tuning your car.

He tuned my car, and I've been very happy. It was worth every penny and then some.

So you dont have anything holding the MSD's in place huh, are they inside the battery box? It looks kinda like they are just being squished between the battery and the a/c dryer. Is that pretty much it? Do you happen to know what size battery it is? Looks kinda like the stock size battery, is that right?

Thanks,
STEPHEN

Ken,
Stephen may be alluding to it just kinda looks like ya dumped everything in the engine compartment whatever falls off ain't worth keepin' HAHA!!! Did you ever see Beverly Hillbillies where Jethro would be working on the truck and he would have all the extra parts in the bucket that he didn't know where they went so he just dumped them on the motor and shut the hood! Kinda like that!!! But hey I did not say it, it was that little troublemaker Stephen! The same guy who dissed your tuner
I'm sorry guys I just hadn't behaved badly all week and I really needed to get it out! Forgive me

No, it's outside of the battery case. It's just squished in real tight when I moved the battery case back from the pulley. I moved the battery case to touching the pulley, jammed in the MSDs and then moved the battery case back so the MSDs are really tight and there is only 1/4" between the battery case and the engine pulley now.

My brother installed one MSD on mounted it on the ASP Medium IC shroud and it runs really hot from the radiator fans blowing on it. Mine runs really cool. If you want me to measure the battery size I will. The battery case is not stock, it's from an '88 Honda Accord, I think.

Battery is 9' deep(front to engine pulley), 6.5' wide and 8' deep or high. It barely fits in the plastic battery case.

Can you turn on/off the MSD's to see if there is any usefulness to them when tuning? Or I'm assuming they bypass the stock coils altogether and you can't do that? It'd be interesting to see on a dyno or similar what the benefit truly is on different applications.

Nope, can't turn on and off.

One MSD 6a for each coil.

Decided To Block Air Vent To MSDs

The little air duct to the MSDs is neat, but I decided my IC needed the extra air more than the MSDs, they'll run cool enough.

Here's some more pics.
