When it causes problems in your family life it kind of answers the question for you. Sometimes you try to slice up your time like a big pie and try to plan more time for things like your family.
But then you get consumed with your projects and time has a way of just evaporating. Sometimes your family and your money can evaporate along with it.
I beat myself over the head for letting myself neglect my family time. There are not many guys in this game that I know that aren't the same way. A lot of them have divorced over it too.

Even right now I am sitting on the couch with my wireless NIC in my laptop watching hockey with my wife.
I used to have to do this (PC stuff) upstairs in the study and it is incredible how much this has helped me get with the family. I just kind of type and read between all the family talk and all. That's why if I do not read back over what I wrote it can come out a little nuts too
Sometimes just as long as we are in the same room together it counts towards "family time" and it really is.
My wife an I will be married 17 years the end of next month and together about 20.
All of my projects have to be self supportive financially. At least none of the money can from from our general income.
That makes things go a little smoother as well. I would not go as far as to say that things are always peachey, but we have made it work.
It is usually me staying out in the garage a little too much that gets her pissed.
With most of the people like us we have to be doing some sort of project or we would go stir crazy.
Ari is not dumb and I am sure you have been upfront with him on how things have been going. If he gets involved and the bad luck continues he has to be able to accept that possibility.
You may want to think really hard about taking him up on the offer. It will relieve some of the financial burden and if you pretend it is a customer's car you will probably make an entire season without breaking!
Just do what you believe is best but Ari is a big boy and if he did not have faith in you he would not have made the offer. He evidently knows the situation with you as well. Friendship is a two way street. You hold up to your end as good as you can and that is all you can do.
BTW, the Stars are up 3 to 1 over Edmonton

Peace Marcus. I'll support you in your decision to bail, family comes first.

You can always build another car ... race carts are a bit cheaper and they make em for kids!

I hope you keep driving some form of rotary somewhere. It wouldn't be the same without a monster turbo Marcus car driving around Houston somewhere.

Pick your family and future first!

A rotor will not keep you warm in bed at night!

I wont waste time rehashing over ****, but I understand %100 what you are talking about in relation to things going wrong on your own personal stuff, just go with your gut feeling. maybe stick to doing work for others and not take on so much of the "capital" risk yourself (i.e. running your own car).......you gotta be able to satisfy the "board" about the potential gains/returns of your heavy investment in motorsport.

My favourite saying
How do you make a small fortune out of motorsport?? Start of with a large one!!!

isnt that the truth!!
and no matter how much love you have for *something* you dont want *someone* to loose love for you over it. family absolutly comes first... my fiance knows that she comes first in the end, and that helps. no matter how much time/money i spend, i devote the same amount to her. support from your wife is important, but her feelings are more important. if she has "had it", then i believe you are making the best personal descission to give up the car. it is going to be a win win situation from the sound of it. you get to fullfill your love of driving (at someone else's expence, and she will have more of your undivided attention with a little extra spending cash. (which she probobly deserves after putting up with your hobby for so long.)
best of luck to you with your decission.

Funny thing for the man to say, considering that he insists that the project in progress (turbo and exhaust manifold pipes) sleep on the table next to our bed !!!

Hey Marcus!

I can 100% feel where you are coming from. When chasing numbers with my 1st gen, I kept running into little things that never had the car reach its potential. Its pretty frustrating to make a bunch of power on a dyno, then run 13s all day Its also embarrassing when people know your car and expect much better things!

But I kept at it, and when it came together, it came together in a big way!!

So yeah, like others have said family comes first. Put the garage in storage for a while and come back to it. It will work out in the end!

Or go back to a carb and points

Now he tells the "WHOLE " story after I gave all that BRILLIANT advice !!!!!! , I can now understand why you decided to go that way , NO machine can help your *** when the wife is pissed off at you , especially if the car is giveing you a **** load of problems too. I have been maried for six years and I have a five year old so I know where you're coming from , If you need to sell to keep the peace and your family together then so be it , but just remember that you are a member of this forum (although you wouldnt be driving rotors anymore ) , and I am sure everyone including myself of course , would like you to remain a member of the family , good luck man.

Marcus,

Sorry to hear about the demise of the race car project. I completely understand the circumstances and wish you the best at anything you decide to do in the future. Most of you probably don't know this but last summer Marcus took time out of his busy-*** schedule in the middle of the racing season to fly to Tallahassee to help fix a problem we had been having with a motor in one of our FD's. He flew in for the day and was back to houston the next. i learned more about building a motor in that afternoon than i ever thought possible. Marcus offered very polite "criticism" on one of the first motors that i had ever built, helping to point me in the right direction. i don't know where i'd be without marcus' help and guidance, breif as it was. I wish you luck and future success with anything you decide to do, you deserve it!

Damn, dont I know the feeling. I've also got a 21 month old baby girl and its hard to stay up till 3-4am (or sometime later) working on my car then get up at 7am on Sat to play with the baby. I know my wife wishes I'd never bought the car eventhough I think she is ok now that I havent worked on it in a few months (or spent money on it in a few months).

I know how you feel, I've spent more money and time on my car than I would like but it felt good when my daily driver ran a 125mph trap on modified stock twins on pump gas!!!! I'm finally happy with the hp of my car but I almost gave up on her because it was becoming such a drain on me and my family not to mention my money. My project was not near as big or expensive as yours so I can imagine how you feel.

Last, let me say this. If you do sell the car, please do us all a favor and keep coming to the forum on a regular basis. Me as well as MANY MANY others look up to guys like you for goals and support. Without the forum there is no way my car would be anywhere close to what it is. I'm thankfull for the skilled members of the forum which you are definatly a part of. I'd hate to see you leave our small community so please keep hanging out. It means a lot to the community to have guys like you be apart of it.

i too look to you for advice and always look foward to reading your informative posts! you are a smart guy, it would suck for you to leave the forum!

P.S. anybody can go fast, but when somebody goes fast in a Rotary, or a 4 cy. car you instantly get more respect!

l
EXAMPLE ....Abel's cars.... all my friends (PSCA racers, v8 guys) all give him mad respect for what he has done, and the R100 is thier favorite! back halfed , all steel body!

keep your car, put it on hold, when you have time get back on it, do not sell it, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!

Everyone is having difficult times these days. How do you handle it? I have found new personalities from myself during my ordeals; which if I would have pursued them, I would be typing this from Leavenworth state pen.

My deal is different (of course), but has just as deep roots as yours. While I am not pointing fingers at anyone (and the Acosta's have been very willing/helpful in their situation), I am missing over $50,000 of parts/money at this point in time. Please re-read that sentence 20 times, and then think about the significant other, etc.

Again, let me clear up any "confusion". My dealings are private, and I will not go into detail about it. I will say that it is NOT the direct fault of the Acosta's, but just a business that collapsed with me in the DIRECT middle.

Now, this is the SECOND time I have been directly screwed on my car loosing thousands.

How do you deal with it? Not to sound like some psycho, but odd enough my world has come to the 'edge' a few times only to be saved by my wife. I have a personal problem with thieves, crooks, etc. And all of my assets in my stuff has been gone for five months now. It is tuff!

I am curious what you do to release the stress.. I can't stop asking, because I need an answer. I know in my personal case, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but at the expense of more than an additional $10,000 which I do not have. Recent developments in my situation have been very promising, but I don't believe anything anyone tells me anymore.

Sadly enough, to bring some happiness I purchased a Land Rover Discovery. This seemed to help quite a bit. I have also got a new attitude of "I don't care", but I am waiting for this illusion to break.

Hmm..

My situation is in no way similar to yours as its on a much smaller scale BUT, I still think the feelings are realitive. I decided I needed a new hobby for a while so I went and bought a SIG 229 .357 and started going to the shooting range and reading about guns and taking it apart, cleaning it, ect. Its fun and I really do enjoy going to the range and poping off 100 rounds after work.

BUT - if your as close to the edge as you say and your stress if coming from actual people instead of your car......my idea might not be a good idea for you haha

It really did take my mind off things though cause it gave me something else to think about.

Haha. You know, it’s actually quite funny; in a sick sense.

It is pretty lame for me to come to the near edge of loosing control. Logically, it has no bearing. It further puts me in a state that I could NEVER have the freedom of loosing $50,000.00 again. Odd, but I like the idea of being able to loose $50,000.00 if I choose too (or don't choose too).

But the emotions part of me, is pulling and pulling for revenge. I have a problem, and do visualize bad things to those whom 'I' deem worthy.

Yeah, I may need to seek some help. But ****, people think they can't just get away with screwing people.

As far as the guns go, 3 weeks ago I pulled out my Bushmaster XM-15 (AR-15), and tore it down. I then rebuilt the rifle, cleaning each part as I went along. I re-sighted my Trijicon TA-31 scope ($1400 kick *** scope!), readjusted the trigger weight pulls, etc.

Then I 'readied' 6k of ammo and magazines for a SHTF scenario. It does give you some relaxed since to do this, but you are correct: It also makes you think about other things..

Marcus: Sorry to hear of all your bad luck.......

Been down that same road myself......no matter how hard you try it is never enough....things seem to always go wrong.
My daily driven Turbo II broke in the 10's back in '99 and it ran good
.....started trying many new things and lost track of what worked !!!! last year it could not stay together...from broken side plates, broken trannies, axles, electrical gremlins to finally locking-up a motor due to no oil because of another broken side plate.........well, I was so pissed that I drove ity 'til it locked completely.
I decided to let that car go.
Since the rotary fever is premanent.......I'm still playing with my rotaries.....2 Fds.

Like many have mentioned..... take a break, a breather away from the race car and then make the decision.

Family and happiness is very important and whatever you decide I'm pretty sure it will be for the best, so good luck and hope to see you around.

Hey Marcus, haven't been keeping up with your work and sorry to hear what you're going thru.

The drive/build deal with the Mustang sounds good - why don't you just step away from your race car for awhiles? I've had my share of headaches, and I usually just put the source away for a little bit - seems like I usually have everything working for me when I come back to it.

Another idea - why don't you push your turbo kits more? Seems like a (relatively) high profit business. Build some kits, make 'em nice and shiny (I know you think fluff doesn't belong on race cars, but bling sells :P), and work some deals with resellers like the RX7 Store.

Only you can determine your priorities of course, but hang in there (no matter what route you choose to take)!

Red-Rx7, i am an avid martial artist (5 years Jook-lum,praying mantis)and fight at least two if not three tournaments every year, that is one of the ways i deal with my pressures. another thing is that i have just completed my course on fitness training and am now a CFT so four out of the seven days of the week i am in the gym training people while training myself for my next San-Shou (full contact) tournament in august. so i am not really feeling any pressure from this car just frustaration. i have plenty of things to keep me busy and that keeps my sanity!

Dclin. i am just plain ol' tired of building **** !!! it gets old and is very time consuming, now that my little girls is almost four she loves to hang out with me and kick it so i would rather do that than slave over a welder for hours. dont get me wrong, i still have projects that i am working on, but to make turbo kits in quantity is a lot of work for me to do by myself. i tried to train someone to help but it never works out and i end up doing it myself anyway!!

i have been doing some soul searching over the last two weeks and my decision is to sell the rolling chassis ( all of you will see it by the end of the year) and just knowing that my 'baby' is making someone else happy is good enough for me. the mustangs are flat out hauling *** nowadays, mike murillo ran a 7.20 on 10.5"w tires and a 100mm turbo in street trim, another guy just ran a 7.89 on true 10.5" tires and stock suspension ( not ladder bars) and a 91mm turbo!! so i still have my work cut out for me.

i am not leaving the forum, y'all are like family to me and i appreciate your kind words and support. the only thing changing is that i dont have a race car anymore.

Sounds like you have the most important thing to worry about right there man. Everything else is come and go, just make sure you keep her happy and thats all that will matter to you.

Dont sweat the car man, you can always make another one down the road, but your little girl will never be 4 again.
