Question Has anyone heard anything about further development of the 16x? Anything new!

MAZDA:16X | The Rotary Engine

It's been awhile since Mazda announced that they were developing the 16x, but save that, I've not seen/heard very much about it.

Has anyone heard anything about it lately, or has it gone to the back-burner? It'd be a shame not to go through with it! It seems to have so much potential.

i've heard the same rumor from a couple different sources, obviously its not out yet and as such rumor is rumor.

the announcement is due i think sometime next year, car is 2014. the car is half the weight of the GTR, and the HP target is 300-350hp. i put this first because it means that they have something to put the engine in. they have been playing with mass produced carbon fiber too, i'd expect something simple like a roof panel at first.

as far as the engine goes, its direct injection, 3 spark plugs per rotor. non turbo, possibly without the 6 ports.

the next bit is conjecture on my part, or its my opinion.

i would expect after seeing the skyaktiv piston, that the new rotary will have a special combustion recess. the new engine will have a lower broader powerband, power will peak lower (7k vs 8500 for the Rx8), and the midrange, where you do 90% of the driving will be stronger.

Yeah, direct injection sounds like it's going to be an awesome upgrade! 3 spark plugs? It only has 2, a trailing and leading in all of the pictures that I've seen. Where did you hear that?

I'd love to see the car that they're putting it in! Personally I'm interested in this new power-plant to see it transplanted into a 7! ;D

I heard they were supposed to release it in 2012 but the earthquake last year plus the fragile economy put all the experimental projects on hold indefinitely.

Apparently the 16X was originally delayed when the financial crisis took hold in 2008. Mazda then moved their resources from the 16X project to help develop the SkyActiv engines. Now the project has most recently been delayed due to missed emissions benchmarks. (a typical speed bump for the Wankel going into production.) However, Mazda says it will never give up€ on the rotary engine, so expect the 16X to eventually make production.

The idea of a 1.6 liter 2 rotor just seems perfect to me! Boost it and throw it in an FC and there's my dream car.

Legitimate information on the matters seems to be scarce to none, but here are a couple of links for you.

The over all size of the motor has only been increased marginally, while the weight has been decreased. (why didn't Mazda make aluminum housings sooner?!) The internal volume and stroke have also been increase substantially.

Doesn't anyone have any more information on this?!
Let's hear it!!!

I've seen a few rumors about it having an electric supercharger as well, but those rumors all came from websites that I deemed untrustworthy. (An example would be that one stated that the Renesis 13b is a 2.6 litre... -_- I stopped reading right there, hahaha.)

one of the guys working on it. remember we haven't seen a picture since 2008, and things have probably changed as things progress, particularly if it didn't meet emissions targets.

Do you remember anything else that dude said? I was just curious where you got that information, because there isn't much out on the subject, and it goes against the pictures that I've seen. I don't doubt you though! There's just so much BS that I've found trying to scour for details, hahahahaha.

Was that guy a member of the forum?

well the pics are from almost 5 years ago, and then B its not out yet, it kind of sounds like they are still working on it.

to go any further would just be speculation. for instance the engine i've heard about might not even be a 16X! they mention the DI, and the 3 plugs, but not the displacement. it could be a 12A.

i did read something about the 16X on the forum, but generally you have to get out and go to events, in 2001 i got to talk to Koby, who is very nice, and he basically outlined the Rx8.

Mazda 2017 RX-7 - Paris show: Mazda RX-7 dream still alive | GoAuto

"The 52 year-old designed the last rotary-engined ‘sportscar’, the RX-8 that was recently discontinued, a victim of increasingly tough global emission and fuel economy requirements, but sees the future RX-7 as a real two-seat sportscar, possibly with a mid-mounted engine.

He has an important ally in engineering ace Ichiro Hirose, the recently appointed general manager of Mazda Europe’s R&D centre and responsible for the brand’s SkyActiv technologies.

Mr Hirose, who is also a Mazda Europe vice-president, told GoAuto in Paris that Mazda was still working on a Sky Rotary but, like Mr Maeda, made it clear that nothing could be done until the company was in better financial health.

“There is a dream,” Mr Hirose told us when asked about the potential to apply SkyActiv technology to the rotary engine.

“If this kind of SkyActiv technology is well-received then we have a chance to restart such a development.

“At this moment we are not in a position to restart again, but if in future we earn more money then I believe there is a chance.”

In the meantime, Mr Maeda – the father of Mazda’s current highly acclaimed ‘Kodo’ design language – continues to do RX-7 design sketches in the hope they will one day turn into a production reality. "

Ah.. thats not real great news. Unfortunately with the changing curve of US emissions laws over the next decade, even with one produced, it may be difficult to bring it stateside.
