Going 3mm on my HBP REW, need suggestions

Motor is a Half-Bridge REW single-turbo (GT40R). I'm using JHB Cermet A housings, with Rotary-Aviation 3mm Superseals and REW rotors milled to accept the bigger seal.

This is my first 3mm motor, and I need some advice on which corner-seal to use. Mazda offers two different 3mm corner seals:

Pre-'76 style solid corners:

And '76-85 insert-style, similar to the 2mm seals:

I've heard a lot of people complain about low compression with 3mm motors, and I'm wondering if the corner seal had anything to do with it.

For those that have 3mm boosted 13b's, which corner seal did you choose and why? What kind of results have you gotten?

holy ****! i didn't know you blew it up ... what happened? when?

i also didn't realize you were going with a 40R. you had a 62-1, right?

anyway, i think i remember reading Judge Ito recommending the solid type (the first pic) seals for big boost and big nitrous motors. i think it was a matter of physical integrity, but i honestly don't remember. it's in the Engine Building section. check it out.

Yea, it popped at the strip. Was running 14psi, and the A/F looked fine but as soon as I shifted to 3rd it detonated on the front rotor and ate it all up. Coasted across the line to a 7.08... Didn't even get my 6!

Lost an REW rotor, the turbine wheel, and a JHB Cermet A housing. Once I got it apart I found that I was getting some nice rear-iron flex on those 7500rpm launches. It had beaten the **** out of one side seal and made a nice little mark on the rear-rotor. It's going back together with the same irons, a new Cermet A housing, a stud kit, and some 3mm Superseals. I don't care if I don't get 130psi pulses out of it, i can't afford to replace another housing like that.

I've got a 40R waiting in the wings. I'm gonna sell my 62-1 as a rebuildable core, and probably the HKS manifold while I'm at it.

Thanks for the info, I'll search a little more.

well, yeah ... i forgot to mention that this is over at nopistons, but i guess you probably figured that since we don't have an Engine Building section . if you don't find what you need there, then what i would do is probably shoot a PM to Crispeed, GT1 20B (?) (can't remember his actual screen-name, but it's Carlos at CLR Motorsport), Judge Ito, or BDC - all here on the board.

anyway, refresh me on your exhaust manifold/wastegate setup. do you think you had a crazy spike or something?

i'll be keeping up with your build. your car and motor setup is one of my favorties here. i really liked it a lot and would love to see the car back up and running well.

Hmm, I'm already talking to Carlos about his Getrag transmission kit, so I'll ask him about the corner seals while I'm at it.

Manifold was an HKS FD style log, with a 44mm TiAL gate. Boost spiking wasn't the cause for the failure, but since the turbo was damaged and the season is over I figured I might as well splurge and put a monster on for next season.

I'll post pics when something else cool happens with the car. Not much going on right now.

Was my first "project car" back in '01. I did that paintjob in my garage.
