Gains vs. noise (FD)

Currently I have a 94 FD touring 5spd, 63.5k on the clock, picked up with a bad clutch, needed a clutch, many vacuum lines, small fixes, maintenence, aluminum ast confident with reliability and running condiiton etc

Since installed a downpipe and chopped the airbox, seems to have gained a fair amount, running factory main cat and stock exhaust

my question is, first, do i replace the paper filter with a K&N? i've heard time and time again in the threads that chopping the airbox results in the same gains as an expensive intake (and why shouldn't it?) but are the oem-ish paper filters REALLY that much worse than a K&N?

what about catback exhaust? in this configuration does it yield ENOUGH gain to give up the beautiful sound of quiet?

What about spark plug wires? These "look" fine, haven't ohmed them out, but prolly should swap them out, are we on the use NGK oems only page or is there a better alternative in light of modifications that proves effective? I've used a lot of different manufacturer plug wires in previous cars only to find the oems always seemed to work the best...

Furthermore, i'm looking to make SAFE "horsepower freeing" power mods as opposed to upping the boost and sacrificing engine longevity/oem drivability, so what all what you recommend?

please don't tell me to search, i'm competent and as time goes on other items (new) hit the market and the upgrade path changes, so let's approach this thread as new fd owner hit the basics and wants to know what COST EFFECTIVE & SAFE modifications yield the best bang for the buck considering he's happy with the suspension/brakes/small items

I would, you never have to replace the filter again, the K&N works better when dirty than a paper filter, and the K&Ns DO flow more air than a paper filter. In fact, I have a low mileage stock replacement K&N if you want it.

Jeez, search man... The Racing Beat dual-tip will be barely louder than stock, with the windows up anyway. It doesn't drone or make any nasty noises. You will feel the difference in power.

If they have a lot of miles or you don't know their mileage, just swap them out when it's convenient. I would just use NGK, they fit perfectly and have good-fitting boots. Not that expensive either.

Intake, bigger stock-mount IC, downpipe, and cat-back exhaust. Very safe and reliable modifications, that will make a noticeable difference in power without reducing reliability (increasing it in several ways, in fact).

There are almost no new performance items for the FD, especially in the big areas. The v-mount IC is probably the newest big thing and it's been out for over 3 years. Even the PFC has been out for over 4 years.

The Rotary Extreme hood damper kit is pretty new!

yeah i've heard the RB dual tip is a good catback to go with, but i must say the sheer acceleration it has right now mixed with NO exhaust note is absolutely beautiful, but eh, screw it... i need more ponies

Eh, I don't like loud cars, especially as I daily drive mine, and I've had absolutely zero reservations about running the RB dual-tip.

I definitely agree...the RB Cat-Back looks and sounds great without being annoying for a daily driver. My .02 cents.
