Actually my external wastegate sounds like compressor surge sometimes, but higher pitched and slower...ie it opening and closing.

Compressor surge is when you don't have a (working) BOV and when you let off the throttle after boosting, the excess boost pressure can't be released via BOV and is pushes back against the turbo's. (do they actually spin backwards, or just revolt and make that wub, wub wub sound as air passes back through them the wrong direction?)

Find a GN or T-Type and listen to it when they get off the throttle, most don't have BOV's, at least the ones around here don't (and I don't understand why).

Well if its plumbed back to the atmospher yesy you can hear it. If its plumbed back then no. You usualy can hear it as it slowly starts to open up. Aka as wastgate creep.
