autometer=crap
Before i had the attitude that a guage was a guage,nope not anymore. A few months ago I bought a autometer water temp guage(electric) and never had a chance to install it. I installed it when I put my engine in and noticed when driving down the road the damn thing wouldn't read. I double checked everything and it seem that everything was hook up correctly(still, the guage didnt work). I fired the car up last night and what do you know the guage works. The guage didnt work this morning either for some odd reason. Also the readings are so close together it difficult to read. While the haltech is reading 190 the autometer is reading a hair below 180. Has anyone ever had any shity exsperiences with autometer?

Do you have the temp sensor right next to the haltechs sensor? If you don't than think about what you said.
Reason for it not working at first, don't know. Maybe it's possessed.

Autometer liquid filled boost gauges suck horses ***** too !!!
The mother ******* need to be reset (bleed screw) everytime the temp changes !!! Park the car in outside you need to bleed the gauge (equalise pressure) even they the POS will still not sit on true 0 reading.
They are up to 1psi or more out on a 15 psi range ! PROVEN compared to high accuracy Honeywell MAP pressure sensor data logs.
I ripped mine out and threw it down the drive ! thats how much I think of thier boost (guess) gauges

My autometer (mechanical) boost gauge has been perfect for a little over a year, reading spot on with my Power FC.
I know Mahjik has an autometer boost gauge too that he's been using for a lot longer, that has never failed him.

I have mechanical AM gauges, and they are spot on with my Haltech. If it is electric, then you almost certainly have an intermitent short.
BTW what are guages, and gages?

well, i dont know where the shortage would be. I think the guage is just pos. The boost guage works fine I think(mechanical). My sensor is on top of the water pump housing. i dont see what having two sensors close together would do(feedback?)?? I really dont depend on the guage sence the laptop is there giving more than enough info The guage is really there to fill in the extra hole on the pod. I just thought that i should post this if anyone was deciding to go with this guage for dependability. I personally wouldnt recommend this it to anyone(unless for looks like I did).
Rice, im sorry about you boost guage, did you get another one(not everyday you find a boost guage laying out in the street ). I would feel gifted If I did.

Water temps will be different depending on where you measure them, hottest right out of the motor(by the thermostat), coolest down low going back into the motor. this is important since the difference can be ~40 degrees. If an electric gauge works intermitently, it is failing to get power at some point, either your connections, or their internal ones have a problem. Either way I would get a mechanical gauge, I really like mine, it is a full sweep from 120-240, with 180-220 being 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock (200 is straight up). Very accurate, and easy to read. Just hate to see you go spend a ton of money on such a simple device. Carl

btw: the only Autometer guage I have is oil pressure, about 40 at idle and 88-89 above 3k.

You get what you pay for.
I can't stand Autometer gauges, they are ugly, cheap, POS, and doesn't have any good features.
For example, with the Defi gauges can record and has a playback feature for all the gauges, which is extremely useful. There gauges are very well made, and accurate. Hmm...I wonder why I spent $250 each for my Defi gauges

As for the gauge not working and then working again, it's your wire from the sensor. I had the same problem. Autometer recommends using something like 18 gauge wire to run to the sensor. After a week of driving my car just on the street, the wire just got too hot and started to do the same thing as you described. I bought some 12 gauge wire and ran it from the sensor and it's worked fine ever sense. What gauge wire are you using from the sensor?

ok, stupid me. I wasnt thinking the whole time. Its not a mechanical guage therefore it only works when theres power going to it . and I was wondering why it only worked I night. Now I understand why it would read differently, makes all the sence

.. autometer did two things back at the beginning of this year that had me sign off of thier products for good.. and all my customers as well. First off they delayed my orders from lacst OCt. till after Jan, stock was there but they waited and would not say why.. then I found out, Autometer riased thier priced across the board on all thier comp/race/custom ( their whole 02 catalouge basically),and they waitied tll the new pricing took effect to send out my parts... riased by 100% in some cases, but on avg by @ 68% , excepet for the 'custom' guages like the Phantom and the vintage thier are no more mechanical to be had. THier quality level stayed the same.. poor.
for the prices they are now chargeing you can get the lower end HKS and Defi parts .. which are MUCH higher quality..
