Anyone running the hks twin power?? need opinions
Basically what the heading says. i got off the dyno and at about 14-15 the car just started cutting out. Wondering who has tried it and what you think. Thanks a million.

I bought a used unit off the forum. I'm waiting for it to arrive... Once installed I do a before and after write-up.
In the mean time. here's some info on the HKS TP that I found on suprastore.com
One of the common issues with Supras running higher boost is the increased possibility of high-boost misfire. This unit is the ONLY ignition amplfier and control unit that we at SupraStore.com have seen help resolve the high-speed miss on big-boosted cars. We would recommend this unit for everyone from stock and BPU cars to a MUST HAVE for those with a big single or twin turbo upgrade. Installation takes about 90 minutes. We run it in ALL of our high HP cars here in Arizona.
The Twin Power Ignition Amplifier is an easy-to-install ignition upgrade that continuously monitors the charge condition of the coil to allow the system to recharge to its maximum capacity without overcharging. The Twin Power provides optimum spark duration and voltage output resulting in crisper throttle response & more horsepower. it is a combination of CDI (Capacitive Discharge Igntion) and Transistor ignition in one package. The CDI segment is effective at producing high voltage, but only for a short time period, like most performance igntions on the market. Therefore, the Transistor segment controls current to the coil (impedance matching circuit) & promotes a longer spark duration. The combination of the CDI & Transistor system creates higher RPM horsepower & lower RPM throttle response.
So what does the above paragraph mean in English? Good question, but here is the answer: In high boosted turbocharged engines the cylinder pressures go up very high and often times "blow-out" the spark created by a spark plug and then you have an engine miss as the spark plug and ignition system are fighting hard to keep up with all that boost you have. The factory ignition system does a great job at standard boost levels, but once you crank up the boost you can have high speed missing problems. Imagine a light switch being turned on and off at a very fast and consistent rate. For that fixed time that the light switch is on you have light. The factory ignition system provides a spark just like this, ON for a very short period of time and this is not adjustable. The Twin Power unit allows for the spark to remain firing or like in the light switch analogy leave the light on a bit longer. This increase in the "duration" (or length of time) that the spark is on helps eliminate HIGH BOOST/MISS.
Great product and used on the KINGS car. You will receive the Twin Power ignition box, harness and instructions.

My car was breaking up in the top end. Adding the HKS twin added a few HP and smoothed out the top...smooth enough that I hit the rev limiter a few times the first week because it felt so good in the higher rpms. They are expensive, but worth it. I have dyno's before and after the HKS. You can see the breakup before, after the charts are smooth.

Thanks for the reply. I already know the reason that i am getting it... its bc its missing a anything above 15 psi in the higher rpm. I appreciate the input though once again. What setup do you run? I have a t78. Thanks again.

Your right about that but my understanding is that you dont get hardley any benifit from hooking up Trailing unless your running crazy boost/hp and that if your running that much the hks isnt enough anyway. If that is the case you can get a msd 6a for $175 to run leading instead of paying the additional $300 (300 over the price of a msd) for a HKS just to amp the trailing.
It seems from what I've read that your paying $300 worth of amp to run your trailing and its not even really benificial because the Leading is whats so important and the main concern.
I guess I should probably restate my question as this. Is there anything the HSK can do to the Leading that something like a MSD 6a can't do???

Not burning out the coils good enough reason? I've seen enough posted here and on the big list going back the 4 plus years I was on it that many people who get the msd and crane units will fry the leading coils, which cost some nice cash looking at the mazdatrix web site. Granted that assuming everything was hooked up right and it burned them out without user intallation error. It's a big bulky box used for stereo equipment that you have to find a way to make it fit in the engine bay.

I used to have it and noticed nothing. I put it on before and after dynoing and it did nothing.
I sold it and bought a MSD digial 6 plus with a 2nd genn leading coil. (stronger) and it cleaned up top very noticably.
I also noticed the HKS unit made my timing float a bit and I wasn't happy about that.

I may eventually go with an MSD and the 2nd Gen leading...but that's later when I don't have anything else to do to her
I've not noticed anything like ErnieT said, since watching the timing is quite easy with the PFC. No timing float whatsoever. I guess its the classis, every car is different and will respond difference to the same mod. I picked up 8 rwhp and 19 ft/lbs with the HKS unit installed. It helped to burn of some of the extra fuel Brian at M2 had in his maps, but no be lean, at the time when I had the M2 stage 3 and added the hks twin.

I dont know anyone having probs with the msd frying the coils but Spyfish007 had a pic showing where his Jacobs fried his L.
I think there are to reasons to run these. One is that your running very rich, the stock coils need a little more punch to burn the fuel since there isnt as much o2. This was prob the case with Tim as he was running a M2 which prob has a a/f of around the 10's with no amp. In this case I think you get the additional hp and smoother lines because there was a lack of tuning (upgraded ecu's are safe but extremely rich and not tuned for your car) that is now being helped out but the hks.
The other scenerio isnt so much a extremely rich a/f but rather the shear volume of fuel like Ernie T. He was tuned on a dyno to something like mid 11's....however he's dumping in a ton of fuel and the stock coils just dont have the fire to burn it all.
I think if you have a car like Ernies dumping a ton of fuel the HKS isnt going to provide enough punch to the L. If your running something like a upgraded ecu thats super rich you just need a little extra punch to burn it. In that case I'd say the HKS is fine.

dont get the jacobs. I have heard of people's engines poping becuase of the jacobs. The jacobs is like $300+ and msd and crane Hi-6 is like $150
