Thumbs up Aftermarket Coil Questions

Hi, when looking for an after market coil what should i be looking for? As there are a lot of different brands and specs available.

What makes a coil good?
Is it the amount of volts it can put out or the spark duration,
what ells should be taken in to consideration.

there is no need for an after market coil. The stock ones are more than adequate. If you want to upgrade your ignition, I suggest MSD ignition boxes. I will probably get flamed for this but I have noticed improved acceleration, smoother operation, and best of all it's more fuel efficient. That is just using an MSD 6A on the leading coils only. I would love to try them on the trailing as well, but it takes two more boxes where the front you only need one.Jacobs used to make an ignition upgrade for the 7, but I think they quit making it. I believe it was in the $800 range. I wanted one but could never justify the outlay of cash when my MSD does so well.

i dont think the stock coils will cope with what i have in minde 28+psi.

what generation car do you have? if it's a Gen I, then try MSD Blaster coils. they are the only ones i have past experience with and if i weren't going to be going FI with Gen II coils, i'd still use them. i don't know how readily available they are in the UK, but even if they aren't, there should be an equivalent there, no?

if you have a Gen II or III, although i'm sure some people out have replaced their coils with aftermarket ones, i'm not sure how many cases actually qualified as an "upgrade" per se. i believe the stock coils can handle the boost levels you propose with a good amplifier like the MSD 6AL (or other model).

make sure your electrical system is at its best [ground(s) particularly], get 2 to 3 boxes, quality wires and of course, choose an appropriate plug-type and heat range.

2nd gen coils are damn robust. Aftermarket oils like Blaster coils have got nothing over them. The 1st gen ignition system leaves somethng to be desired and even the RX-8 ignition system needs to be upgraded but if you've got a 2nd gen, leave them.

Iv got the normal 3rd gen coils, as it is a FD that I own. Upgrading the earth strap located on the upper intake manifolds is one of the best mods you can make its definitely a good idea when I done this I was amazed at how much better the car would ideal. Spark plug and ignition wise I have a pretty good idea of what im going for but what I would like, is if one off my fellow rotor cousins out there can look at the specs of three coils which iam considering and tell me what they think by the way I have no concerns about immersions and other such things.
