So guys......how many of you have done this and noticed a difference in your 1/4 mile times? If so, by how much?

MY BUDDY HAS A 90 WITH THE SAME MODS BUT WITHOUT THE PORTED MOTOR AND HE HAS THE 4.30 GEARS AND HE IS RIGHT NEXT TO ME UNTIL WE HIT ABOUT 90 OR SO. IT PISSES ME OFF...

THAT IS MY NEXT UPGRADE, SO I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

I have also been wondering about upgrading the gears for a long time. I don't think there are too many people on this forum that have done this mod. I guess I have to wait for you to give me back your feedback on the gears. :p

My drag simulation program shows maybe .1 to .2 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Big deal.

Cool

Unless I'm mistaken, there is no way to recalibrate your speedo to show correct MPH if you make the gear switch.

I once raced a TII that had about the same HP as me except he had 4.3's. He took me off the line, but I caught him in 3rd. gear.
I don't think you would notice any difference in the 1/4.
It would be faster off the line, but you would make it up in the end.

3.90's would get you lower rpm for better economy and slower times.

4.30's will cause you to run higher rpm at lower speeds so you'll accelerate faster.

Its just math

3.90's would get you slower ecceleration, but higher top end. I think that's what you want Tony.
Here's a chart.

you can just get a speedo gear for the J-spec RZ... it came stock with the 4.3 gear... That's what I have in my car...

The 4.3 will keep you in the power band better when racing... If your going to drag this is what you want... even better would be to put in a 4.7 final and a Close Ratio gearset in the tranny...

hmmmm, what about w/ an aftermarket ECU like motec or haltek or wolf3d. Could you recalibrate the speedometer then?

The speedometer doesn't have anything to do with the ECU.

Ernie, Get your car running right first then play with the gearing Are you gonna be using slicks once you get the car running right? Once you use the slicks the gear ratio will change so use that as a factor for drag racing your street car and sizing your slicks. Just to let you know, I have 4.88 gears on my ford 9" rear setup with 29.5" x 13.5" tires, hopefully I will be around redline when finishing the 1/4th. The 4.3 should do you fine. no need to go as huge as a 4.7

How hard is it to swap end gears?
And what will replace stock end gears? (Series 4 T2 mainly in question)

Not on RX-7's, but maybe some other cars.
