3rd gen tranny on a 2nd gen

Can I put a 3rd gen tranny on a second generation? I have a 1988 n/a and I keep running through transmissions. this is the 3rd time since I started my mods. I thought about a TII tranny but I want more. will it work? I know I will have to buy a flywheel and clutch kit

the only "more" you get from a 3rd gen trans is more headache because the clutch is the opposite from the normal T2 type clutch action.

The Series 5 (88-91) T2's have the same cogs as the 3rd gens do, in other words they can both handle the same amount of power and stress, so put a series 5 T2 box into your car and quite trying to be difficult.

I am not trying to be difficult, I am only trying to set up my car to be reliable. It is a pain in the but to change a tranny, I don't want to do it again after this.
Thanks for your help though. I had considered the series 5 first but thought that the 3rd might be stronger

I've got a tranny from an 87' TII in my 91' NA. I've also got a TII diff. with 4:30 gears compressed into it, and it is PLENTY strong.

Good luck,
Derek
