3" exhaust advise.

i recently bought a s4 with

non-ported engine
gt-40 turbo
hks 50mm wastegate
blitz bov
motoria 3" exhaust
blah blah blah...

anyway, the exhaust is too loud......for me.....and my neighbors.

so, i did a little searching through some posts and found that most ppl seem to think the RB 3" sounds more quiet than the other 3" exhausts.

i surfed around their site and looked at their 3" "pre-silencers". but i didn't see any mention of 3" mufflers. what's up with that? also, what exactly is the difference between a "pre-silencer" and a "muffler"?

what i'm wondering is will i be able to just get a RB 3" pre-silencer and have it installed in/on my motoria exhaust?

i checked the dimensions of their "medium" and "large" pre-silencers and they seem pretty big.

what are the chancers i can get it connected onto my current system and be nice and tucked up under the car?

will i just have to get a full RB system?

advise please.....my neighbors will thank you

welcome.

i'm not familiar with Motoria. generally speaking RB systems are very good for street-driven cars. i doubt if you'd ever have to replace it for as long as you own the car.

that said, if you simply want to quiet the car down, then just have a 3" muffler grafted into the system upstream. look into Borla, Magnaflow, or Walker. any of those should be enough as long as it's stainless steel wool-packed inside and at least aluminized outside.

presilencers are just what their names say. they are there to silence some of the exhaust's tones before the main mufflers. while it's true that there are dedicated presilencers (mostly those bullet-shaped things you've probably seen), you can use any low-restriction or straight-through muffler that give you enough ground clearance as a presilencer.

btw, the tital should read "3" exhaust advice", not "advise". forgot how to spell.

anyway, apparently the Motoria is also refered to a SSautochrome. it has a "muffler", but it doesn't seem to really have any muffling qualities.

yeah, i'm hoping i can just graft a pre-sliencer or muffler onto this system. but after looking under the car i'm a little skeptical. this exhaust is a single exit on the drivers side and the way the system lies it doesn't really utilize the area where the oem mufflers went.

i guess i should just take it to a professional exhaust shop.

a couple things i'm curious about-

1. what's the difference between a 3" pre-silencer and 3" muffler?
(i specify 3" because there appears to be a big difference between 3" mufflers and smaller than 3" mufflers)

2. are there any 3" mufflers that actually muffle? or are they all just straight though designed for maximum performance?
(you know....do they have baffles and stuff?)

oh ... SS Autochrome. yeah, i've heard about them. i still think you should just get a good muffler and have a shop graft it in. however, the choice is yours. ultimately you have to live with the car and neighbors.

3 things:

1. you need to understand that large bore exhausts are not going to muffle a rotary (or even a reciprocating engine) as much as their small bore counterparts. i'm not saying that to assume that you don't know that. i'm saying it merely to see exactly how much muffling you expect to get at 3" - and it all comes down to what you want because the whole "loud" and "quiet" thing is all subjective. i've seen some guys with exhausts that cause my ears to bleed say that their exhaust isn't loud enough. hell, years ago i used to be one of them.

2. check out the Gen II forum. search and see what a lot of those guys are running and see if you can start to get a feel for what you can live with and what you can't.

3. check the websites for Magnaflow, Borla and Walker/Dynomax and gather info.
