13b or 13bt swap in a datsun 510
i have seen a couple 510s with a 13b dropped under the hood and i loved both of them. my friend who owns a 71 510 with the carb'd 4 cylinder rode in my 87 turbo 2 and loved the idea of a rotary. now he wants me to help him drop in a 13b or a 13bt in his car. i guess he assumes that i am a rex god jsut becuase i am the only one within 100 miles that has one. can anyone give an opinion of this swap? give some tips, or gimme a good website or something. i am in the process of gettin as much info as i can
would a 13bt fit? the only two i have seen had 13bs.

I'll give you an opinion. I love 510's! As for will the 13bt, simple answer YES. Just about every engine can be put in that car, or any car for that matter. It will require much modification. I am sure your friend would be very happy with a 13bt in a 510, god knows I would.
The 510 is a beautiful car, my dad had a 510 wagon with the 4 cylinder in it with carbs, header, some mild head work, and cam.
I've been looking for one to stick a 13b in it but can't find one in Fl.
If anyone knows of one for sale in good shape pm me.

so there will be no problem fittin the 13bt, intercooler, turbo and all that. and i am not worried about having to modify or create parts. i already have a friend that will mill me some motor mounts out of a solid billet
i was told that was the main problem

A 13bt will fit but I don't know what has to be fabricated for it to go in.
There was an orange one in Sport Compact Car magazine that was 13bt in that street car shootout they had. It was also in Turbo magazine months ago. I think it got the cover too.

I will be doing the swap, I have a '68 4 door and I am going to buy a 2nd gen GXL and drop the 13b and related parts from that car into the dime. I think it is best to sort out all the efi stuff on the 13b and then later I can rebuilt the motor and prep it for a turbo
swapping the 13b, into a 510 is very difficult work yes it will fit , yes it will work but do you have the patience to do it. for starters the exhaust is on the wrong side and it gets hot, like 1600 degrees plus or minus, so moving the brake and fuel lines is neccesary. you have to add a oil cooler which doesnt fit well inside the bay. the engine is front mounted so you will have to cut out old mounts and fab new and weld in.and have to put a dropped cross member in front of the old. custom oil pan, reversed pick up, with sump and swollen sides is neccesary. shifter location is a major factor you either move back the fire wall or shifter location. shifter location would be easiest. but i mean if you really are interested in doing it im sure you can do it. lookin at $3500+. but hey if you get that done let me know i would love to see it. good luck.

i have don a couple 510 conversions, i could send you some pics, or if you come down you could get some ideas personally..... the cars are local...i know you will nees a se oil pan to clear the crossmemser, and a early style front cover to build the engine mount off of.. the original 510 mounts must go, passanger one is right where your exhaust manifold sits.... plasma cutter or sawzall will fix that.....thats for starters, if you need any help with wiring, fabricating, tranny selection, rear end selection contact me at www.rotaryshack.com
That's great the car will probably be done in Richmond anyway as it can sit longer in the driveway at a friends house and then I will always have an extra set of hands, I would def. like to check things out next time I am around I will call you. also could you email me any pics I am curious to see them, I heared a 12a mount will bolt right to the front crossmember, I am def. going to cut the firewall and mount the engine and trans as far back as I can for weight distribution, I will then reconstruct with fiberglass prbably and then figure out some sort of heat shield for the header. thanks!
