Its a RQ-7B for sure with an 1101 engine. It has a dual ignition and is a carb. We have a fuel injected one coming out soon but not yet. Yeah no muffler so it is loud as hell but its max speed is only 110 Knots. The launcher is nitrogen not nitrous and it launches at 70 knots. It was built by a company called AAI but I dont hold that against the Shadow (actual name of the bird).

As cool as it is and as much as I love my rotary in my car, this bird has had a lot of engine failures in the past. Most of the problems have been fixed, although we are having some new issues of it spiking to 10,000k in the RPMs and then cutting in air.... Like I said though most of the issues have been solved but your going to get issues when they are used as much as they are.
WOW, small world! I grew up in the Sierra Vista / Huachuca City area. My father STARTED (George Makowiec) the very program you work for currently. You must know Mark Farrar, he is a former student of my fathers.

I am currently in the UAV business and my company sells avionics (microboticsinc.com).

Cool to see this stuff in an Rx-7 forum!

YEAH!!! Farrar is the big boss man out there now. He is the head DAC out there. I work out here for DPA but Im not sure if you would know the specific companies out there. It has grown so big now its awesome.

So Microbotics Inc mainly makes controls and avionics for UAS only? Thats pretty awesome. Do you do any training or R&D for systems?

Farrar is a cool SOB! Like I said, my father trained him when he started the school there. Go to the main lobby and look at the flying delta wing (X Drone). George will be there soon for the 25th celebration.

Microbotics, Inc..... we sell avionics for anybody and anything, but yes, the bulk of our products get used in UAV's. Mostly air craft, but some have used out stuff on ground vehicles, cameras, and NASA has used some stuff on submarines.

www.microbotisinc.com Our website is currently kinda lame and needs revamping, it's in a temperary format right now, but you can see some of our products. We used to have a lot more information in there like past work we've done, bio's etc. but because of a suggestion from an idiot we cut the website down to stupid silly simple and lame.

Funny I work on these everyday. We do all the R&D test flights for the army and we just finished the EFI 1102 version. Oh yeah the apex seals are not ceramic they are very similar to stock mazda seals just a little harder. These engines are made by UEL in england. I have one tore apart on my desk right now. They have come a long ways from the earlier days and we are now really starting to see good reliability. By the way the going price the army pays for these things is around $26K the whole plane is around 600k-900k depending on the payload and version.

^ Would it be permissible to post pics of one of these engines torn apart? Or does that violate some rule? Seems like it wouldn't be a big deal because they are commercially available engines.

I'm not sure the head shed would like to see pictures of its new engine that they spent literially a couple million to develop but I can post up some pictures of our now obsolete 1100 series engine tomorrow when i get to work which still is very similar.

And actually the AR741 1102 engine is not commercially available. The US Army owns all its rights. The commerically available AR741 is like comparing a 12a to a new 13B-MSP.

One of the coolest threads here, love seeing rotary power "stuff" lol. Also glad to see that the rotary has not been thrown by the way side and is still it is still being used in newly developed technologies.
