My run with a 405HP Z06

First off let me say those freakin cars are fast as hell. I was driving around Maple Grove raceway today to see if anything was going on. Here comes this new Z06 coming down the road and my friend insisted to see if this guy would want to have some fun, sure enough he did. He turned in front of me and I followed I was all over his *** up to about 85mph on some back roads. My suspension sucks so I really didnt want to push it past that. He totally blew me away in the corners I must say but in the straights I caught up without too much of a prolbem. I really have to give these cars some credit, I had no clue that they were that fast. I am only running 10psi on my fairly new engine so I think with some more boost, ill have to start looking for something faster to race, I better get my suspension taken care of too.

ZO6

The Z06 is damn fast, out the box I think they do low to mid 12's. What are your quarter mile times??? I don't know much about RX-7's, but are you sure this guy was gunning when you were slowly catching this guy?

87 GTR's car runs 11s with an E6K, TO4E, and an off the shelf Mazda reman.

A TO4B 60-1 on a street port tuned even half *** is going to make good power.

Exclamation Flying the BS flag!

I have seen 2 Z06's at the local track and NEITHER of them are even CLOSE to 11's. One white one is there almost every weekend and the fastest he has gone is 12.8 @ 109. I even ran him when I ran a 13.0 @ 111 mph. I won't believe your car runs that till I see the video, sorry.

You'd better disregard all the others running low 12s and high 11s all over the United States then, too.

By the way, what's the elevation of that track. You do know that a naturally aspirated car is going to suffer at higher elevation, right? Short of that, his trap speed should be an indication that he's A) got the 385 hp 2001 Z06, B) probably can't drive, and C) may have something wrong with it, to boot.

Unless the track is at at higher (>1000 ft.) elevation, then there's something wrong with those results. An '01 Z06 should trap around 112-114 mph, and an '02 should trap around 114-116, even if the E.T. is poor.

I've followed the progress of your car a bit, and I have no problem believing this. BTW, you should be able to run a high 11 with a 60-1, and some sticky DRs. 60-1 makes very efficient power at low PRs.

Question: Have you dynoed your car? What's are the specs on your turbo (notably the exhaust housing)? Where do you think it makes peak torque? Just wondering

Good kill.

RX-7 vs Z06

Here we go again. I think Jim Labreck probably sits back rolling his eyes when the "who is faster" thread starts up again. All I know is that both are fast. On a day when my FD is running poorly, the Z06 is faster. If I decide to start modding the Z06, it will be faster than it already is. So- let the argument start again.

Exclamation Hmmm elevation -6 ft!

I think you need to go watch some Z06's at the track. I am in louisiana (-6ft) elevation so cars tend to run fast. Yes the guy in the white one traps 109 mph I know exactly how all of this works, I have been draggin for a long time. I also have a friend who's dad has a fully built C5 (non-Z06) even running NOS and frikin HUGE drag radials and couldn't get better than a 12.4 @ 114. So as I said before, please show me the videos of them running as fast as vette owners say they are! Trust me I like vettes (my dad restores them for a hobby - we have had over 15 vettes - currently on a 65 fuel coupe and 62 vert for my mom) so I am not trying to sound biased.

I have not had it dynoed yet, im still trying to get some more miles on it. I have a 0.84 divided exhaust housing on the turbo. This turbo pulls way past redline (8krpms) with 10psi. I was thinking this was going to be too small of an exhaust housing but it is very streetable which is what I wanted. I get full boost by like 4000 rpms and will start spinning the tires around 5500rpms in 1st and 2nd gear.

Wow, that is a small housing ! With a housing like that you will not notice it's restrictiveness. Your torque will still be VERY impressive, it will just happen lower in the rev range.

The great thing about a very large housing on a rotary, combined with heavy porting, is it's ability to make that amazing torque higher in the RPM range. Which means more power with less boost, compared with a smaller housing. It is compounded even more, the more air you try to cram in there. I'm sure as a street turbo, it is amazing though

Exclamation Well I have a question then.

I have 2 turbos right here. The car is torn down (just did oil pressure mods and put greddy manifold and wastegate on last night). I have a 60-1 HIFI and a T04/S04 Both turbos are P trim turbines and I also have a .96 undivided and a .70 divided turbine housing. I am running STOCK 88 block and have all other supporting mods for the turbo. WHICH COMBINATION SHOULD I PUT ON?? which turbo with which turbine housing. I still roadrace but I don't know if the stock motor will flow enough to justigy the .96 housing. If you guys can't tell me ASAP I will prolly try them both on the car. I am installing the turbo TONIGHT! I am leaning towards the 60-1 with the .70 but I am tempted to go .96 for top end, but will the motor keep up? Also I will have the T04/S04 for sale for cheap after I decide which one to go with.
Thanks,
Patrick Harris

I never said Z06's are slow.

Sorry If I am upsetting you or if you think I don't know what I am talking about. I could be totally wrong about what they run, but you haven't provided any proof to refute what I have seen with my own eyes, therefore I must believe that Z06's can only click off 12.5 max 1/4 time stock. I will stand corrected even if you state only your own personal times from your car at a 1/4 mile drag strip. I Just think that the porsche and corvette owners seem to have this complex of "My car is faster than yours, but its too nice to race (because so and so says they have run xx.xx in the 1/4)". Sorry again if I am making this seem like I don't like them, you have it wrong, bang for the buck a great nice new sportscar. (I will still put the spank on you with my 3,000.00 REX though )
Peace,
Patrick

You're not upsetting me. If you want to take the time to visit Z06vette.com and take a look in the "race" forum, you'll find ample evidence. But if you want to assume that what you've seen is what all Z06s are capable of, that's fine with me too.

Nice kill 1FastT2! I would really like to pay you a visit and check out your car. I just bought a 90 t2 and would like you to give me some advice. I have experience with n/a but not a t2. My friend Ricky (Touringfd3s) said he knows you, so I could probably go up with him. If you want, send me an e-mail at wgnzlz44@hotmail.com

thanks
