My new 89 TII

An owner of a tow yard had a 89 turbo II with a rebuilt motor with under 30k on it sitting in his impound so he took the car out and attempted to put it in his name for his own personal use. Long story short I got the car for 2k because the guy couldn't deal with the smog. Which was great cuz I had 3k to spend on a TII that needed work (I am a mechanic and smog technician).

Anyways car has open element air filter, blitz blow off valve, full 3 inch downpipe/exhaust w/ cat and loud muffler. No air pump or EGR.

Well I think the car is slow, I have driven various other turbo cars and the boost just does not hit like I think it should. I have an 88 NA base model w/ 5 lug and other mods and my new TII didn't seem much faster than my old NA.

Sooo.... my friend and I decide to line up in low second gear and race. He has a 2004 mustang GT with headers, cold air intake, and full exhaust. I thought he would walk all over me because I have been thinking my car was slow. Well I pulled on him in second and in third we were pretty even.

A couple weeks later I saw a Lancer EVO MR edition getting onto the freeway so I took a little detour to race him. He saw me get behind him so he speeds up a little bit as we approach the on ramp. I actually out turned him on the on ramp and when we got straight again we both floored it and he pulled on me but not by much at all. Maybe he was in 4th (I was in 3rd) I don't know. When we hit about 120 he was about 3 car lengths ahead then he back off.

Well to all you NA guys out there get the turbo!

I have an 86 n/a. At the time wasn't streetported, and still had a dash (rest was still gutted).

A friend of mine has an evo8, I don't remember it being an MR (though it was a six speed and wiki says the mr's were the only ones with 6 speeds...) We raced one night, he had 3 passengers, I only had one. He grabbed a car off the start (I was on my street tires) and we sat there with me looking at his bumper till about 80 when we both let off.

I do believe mazda is known for their flat powerbands. They seems to be a bit more interested in cornering than just straight line performance, and by using a flat powerband The cars "seem" to be a bit slower. =p
