Talking My FD vs. WRX

The other night I was getting off a late shift at work when I decided to just go for a little joy ride. I was driving peacefully just enjoying the sound of my car and how nice my somewhat new motor feels (14,000 on new motor). Im appreciating the fact I own my dream car and how great the Rx7 drives I notice what seems to be a heavily modified white STI up ahead. I catch up casually and pull next to the guy he honks three times straight down to business, third honk I floor it I pull about three cars and I am still pulling hard. My gauge is reading 11psi-9psi strong, its perfect weather its cold and I can tell the turbos are loving it and the moon is shining bright. We pull up next to eachother again the same way, second gear roll I give him the hand we are on a very nice road what a beautiful race I tell you. I pull about three to four cars again and still pulling. Then he comes next to me one more time on a almost touge style road I am intimidated by his cars low stature I floor it from second and take the turn pretty damn fast when I look in my rearview mirror he is far back behind. He pulls to the light when I decided that was enough, his girlfriend is next to him she is very cute and petite he is like mannnn "you walked me" what you got done. I told him exhaust and dp he didn’t believe me. I complimented his car keeping it humble and parted ways. Turns out my cousin knows the guy. It’s a 2002 WRX with STI wing he has alot of BPU's and boost raised. He last ran at the track a 13.1 and just got a bigger intercooler. Then going home a Mustang GT with cobra rims is tailgating me. I decide one more race wont hurt he gets the jump I floor it in third I start to pull and slow down due to the high speed and abundance of officers near the upcoming intersection. We go again from a 2nd gear roll and I pull three cars but don’t seem to be gaining to fast for a GT. He pulls next to me I tell him nice car and race. I tell him what I have and he tells me he has a lot of motor work and “there’s no way I could have beat him with exhaust and dp”. Lol Just thought I would update you guys that are my only recent race since the last one. I found myself switching much quicker now. My synopsis of that night is I am really impressed by the cars performance and owning of cars with nearly stock form this truely is a race car. Just want to say much love to all those who are keeping Rx7s in good conditon and keeping the name legendary, wether stock or completely modded. These cars are rare and classics in my book lets keep them around.

thats so true! his motor (knock on wood) is a champ, running great! its funny because after he ran that wrx, he called my cell and informed me of the win. he then described the car and it was my buddys wrx who goes very low 13s. it was funny because I contacted him and asked him if he had ran a red RX7. I didn’t say that it was my cousins because he dosnt know he has one, so he responds and says “yeah man, WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT RX7 HAVE DONE” I just tell him I have no idea. He then says how fast it was and how it just “walked him”. He wouldn’t believe that the RX7 only has exhaust and downpipe. Thought that was funny. He just got his front mount intercooler on so he was kind of upset with the lose, but you win some and you lose some.

good runs cuz.

Not a bad race, yeah I was like hmm.. a highly modded STI would be very quick and a very very competitive race. Dang look-a-likes, good thing you cannot clone a Rx7.

Did he know you had a turbo? It did come stock, but I mean that still definitely gives you an incredibly awesome edge. But still, a great kill, nontheless. And those WRX-ers deserve it, thinking they own the road with their fancy all wheel drive... *goes on rant*

Correct. It was not a sti, but a wrx with a sti wing. The modifications I am aware of are front mount intercooler, intake, bov, stock exhaust with cut out, down pipe, higher boost on a reflashed ecu or piggyback system of some kind. I am not sure what his suspension consists of though.

Last time he was at the 1/4 drag strip, he did a 13.1, that was when he was on the stock intercooler.

Just FYI for the RX7 world the USDM STI was not realeased until 2004. Anyway. The most a WRX can put down with the stock TD04 is about 260awhp or so. That is good for low 13s. That would be with every possible bolt on. Most stock turbo WRXs that are moded have between 180-220awhp. They make about 170awhp stock. Got to love the massive drive train loss on the Subaru AWD system. The only reason they do so well in the 1/4 mile with such little HP is due to an awesome 60ft time and great 1/8th miles. After the 1/8th the fact that they have very poor top end becomes very apparent. When my WRX still had the bigger turbo and was making 320awhp I was running low 12s on the strip but would get walked on the highway by high 12 second RWD cars. I never lost a short race from a dig in my WRX. Stop light to stop light they are insane. I would bet that from 0-60 it could take my RX-7 (GT3540R, 16psi, etc. etc.) or at least be pretty close.

thats true, off the line awd shines, but lets not forget that the RX7 can also rip off the line as well. i remember talking to Ray (PFS) about his 9sec street RX7 and how he would do 1.5-1.3 60fts, of course that was on slicks. still very impressive how well the RX7, a rwd car is off the line.
