Killed an Evo...

Going home in the FD late at night these guys in an evo enter the freeway spot me and head right over to me. They start doing the dance, ya know speed up slow down, speed up, slow down... I don't really feel like racing so I ignore them. Don't really know why. Maybe cuz I have an vented wastegate to the atmosphere and I know if theres a cop within a 1/4 mile or becasue I know they don't have a chance.

Anyway they keep egging me on, and now the passenger starts to wave good bye as they pass me and get in front of me. Fine you want it that bad ok... So I drop it to 4th at 80 MPH on PURPOSE, meaning I know where my powerband is at it aint 4th at @ 80. So they gun it in front of me, so do I. Wastegaste opens... loud a **** and I start to reel them in. I change lanes and now I pass them. They are kinda putting up a good fight, granted I am pulling them. Then I hit my power band at 105 ish, bam! just like that they get left in the dust as now I really begin to pull. Let off around 125 ish. They were pretty far back.

we both took the same off ramp and we chatted for a bit at the light. They said "****! I don't know what happened but all of the sudded you just started to fly!!! that car is bad ***!!" They I explained that when I hit my power band and that I'm not lightly modded, so even at low boost the car is fast." the driver said "oh man! all I got is an intake and exhaust! lol!" The light turned green and we said our good byes and took off.

By the way my low boost is 10 lbs on GT35R which is not in the efficiency range of this turbo. 12 psi is where it comes alive. . Two nights ago I reset my low boost for 12 and high boost for 15.

so yeah mods are GT35R with all supporting mods.

^ Vast majority of the human world doesn't know what an RX7 is.... so they get curious and want to see what its made of.

So it's safe at 15 psi with 91 octane? You're not running AI yet right?

Awesome kill dude. The GT35R is a great turbo. About the only turbo i would run if i decide to go single turbo.

coming from an FD to a shitsubishi evo9, i know damn well not to mess with turbo 7s. i'd have to build my evo to 450awhp to keep up with a stock FD

thanks guys. It's always fun to play. But my car stil makes me nervous though being as loud and illegal as it is. This weekend I'm gonna plumb the wastegate back in. I don't care if I lose 20 RWHP if makes it much quieter.

Yeah 1qwik7 I strongly suggest this turbo for a street car. Very responsive and fun as hell. The other night I did a pull from second gear entering the freeway and my rear wheels broke loose at 50 mph... I don't need more power than that.

Gene,

Actually I had practically bought one but... when the gentleman and I met for the exchange it wasn't as new as I thought it be (I was told it was new and only had been installed for a week) it seemed sketchy so I opted out.

I've only done a handful of 4rth gear pulls, intake temps are in the 20's (but its been a little cold at night but you know that ), solid tune 10.9-11.1, and my EGT's are right around 950-1000, injector duty cycle 85%. So things don't point to a failure at 15 psi. Still nervous though.

Though everything thing seems ok, Howard Coleman sold me on the steam cleaning properties of AI and honestly runing 118 octane when I need it is appealing. Now I can't decide whether pure H20 or 50/50 mix. AS H20 will make me lose power, the 50/50 can be tuned for but if the system fails ouch. If left untuned the 50/50 mix adds about 0.5of richness to my A/F. So I lose power as well. aaargh decisions... Currently I'm tuned conservatively so maybe if I only lean it (no advance timing) about 0.5 is the answer. That way if the systems fails my A/F will still be 11.5 and be relatively safe...

nice kill i raced an MR evo 9 that looked far from stock and was plumbing black smoke out and it was about dead even, the guy was cool and through me a peace out before he got on the freeway. Its funny how guys with cars that are worth 7 times as much as my car cant even keep up, must be an ego buster, i mean just today i killed an MZ4 who was buggin the **** out of me, i bet he felt it for that one, him and his gay lover passenger lol

I'm going through the same thought process and I'm considering going Ethanol. All you need is big injectors, dual pumps, and put ethanol in the tank. But then with ethanol, you don't get the decrease in IATs. haha, hard choices..

Nice Kill.

I was talking to Steve Kan on the phone today and he was telling me about an Evo running 40psi with no AI. It is running on just ethanol. Been driving for a year like that... crazy..

Zhé,

Thanks! No dyno brotha my car was road tuned. But I should be within the 360 RWHP range. At 15 psi I should be at around 400. I'll dyno it eventually

zenofspeed,
lol yeah it's tough man glad you can relate (misery loves company . That's insame abut the evo... I thought running on pure ethanol ruined fuel lines (unless they are upgraded) and what not. crazyness

There are lots of guys in Colorado Springs running ethanol. Most of them are DSMs and WRXs though. I thought about trying it, and I've seen some rotary guys do it, but I'm waiting to see what it does to the engine.

The people out here that are already doing it are sold on it 100%. I was told there was a Chevy Tahoe that has been running it for close to 100k miles with no ill effects. No upgraded fuel lines (they've said the whole thing about ruining fuel lines is a myth), just upgraded injectors and all that.

But for now, I'm like you, it's AI for me. Water mostly I think.

Good kill btw!

15 psi should be no problem for a GT35R on a cold night, I run 15-16 psi on my BNRs and I've been doing it for quite awhile (11.5 AFR)

at what rpm do you get this "kick" at 105 in fourth?

I think SIN was being sarcastic guys.

Evo's are damn quick cars, even stock. They make great daily drivers so lets not start an FD vs evo comparison thread.

Both good cars.

In 2 weeks im going to an evo/sti shootout. You'd be surprised at how many SLEEPER evos there are out there. I remember i saw an evo 9. Black with tints. It has an exhaust (cosmetic) which is all people will know about the car.

He pulled a 10.3 @ 13x..

I was like WOW. Funny thing is he had a plate on the car and drove it there lol

Must be nice to do that. Probably drove to the track with the AC on haha

Methanol is the rubberized fuel line killer. However, ethanol will degrade rubberized fuel line, but at a very, very slow rate. The best way to go for a permanent ethanol setup is stainless steel lines.
On the engine longevity part, ethanol is more of an "cleaner" than gasoline. The only ill-effect I could see is maybe wash-down the housings by thinning the injected/premixed oil.

an evo is a great car and tuned right they're incredible machines with extremely high hp capabilities, my brother has a 1992 eagle talon tsi, not an evo but pretty close, and i wouldn't race him unless i was doing low 10's. not trying to start a fight here man but an evo is definately not a crappy performance car.
