just to clear up how quick WRX's are....

there has been a thread about dudes in 12a FB's beating WRX's and i just thought i would clear up the truth....

now keep in mind that this is in Australia so im not sure if there is a difference in power output or not between models but anyway...

one of me my mates has a 97 WRX wagon , he has only a cat back exhaust and pod filter and he used to BLITZ me in my old FB.

we raced many times and he would simply just win.... everytime!

this used to infuriate me because i had a rebuilt Extend ported motor , full exhaust , 48 IDA weber , match ported intake manifold , 4.44 diff , thermos twin pulley , all of that good junk! my car dynoed 101.4RWKW (138 HP or so) at the wheels and it would still lose straight away even from roll!

i beat many other cars in this thing including a couple of 5 litre 8's on the occasion. however even Driven as hard as i could.... quick launch and revving to 8K every gear screaming, it could just not kep upt the the WRX!

before i go on though, i think that my mate might have a bit of a freak motor because i have been in this "pretty much stock WRX" when we have beaten many other WRX's and 8s etc.

the conclusion:

i sold that car and bought a modified T2 with approx 200RWKW : ) (much better!)

so anyway, now when i race the same WRX , 3rd gear pulls about 3 cars on him and i can beat him pretty much everytime!

however, just to prove how quick they can be off the mark, here is what happened the other night:

driving with my mate stevie and it is a reasonably cold night , so we are pretty happy with how strong my car is running!
we pull up at the lights and as we are waiting there , up comes a newish, round eyed STI WRX (with the big scoop.)

i look at the dude and then at the right time , bring my revs up to about 4.5K.
i could hear his revs being held pretty high to so i knew it was on....... the light goes green!

i got a alright launch, it could have been much better although this STI launched HARD!!!!!
BLLLAAAAAAATTTTTTTT straight infront of me by about 2 cars!
so i wind out 1st gear , hit 2nd and start winding that out too and only just started to reel him in ever so slowly at the end of 2nd gear when he jumped on the brakes.

with fear of doing a ricer fly-by, i put it in 3rd and jumped on the brakes. we only got to about 100 Kms (or 60 Miles per hour)
as i pull up next to the dude i give him the thumbs up and he returns the courtesy waive.

so there it is, with a car that SHOULD beat a WRX STI over the QTR, and a 'not that bad' launch i was BLITZED off the mark!

that was kinda my point in the end , that if these things are launched that way they can be.... then they are truly a tough machine!

they really are not a slow car by any means.

over and out ,

oh and just before i get caught out contradicting myself where is said:
"my launch could of been much better"
and then saying the launch was "not too bad "

the launch was actually not too bad as i said but considering i got 255 tyres on the back and LSD it could have been much better.

you know what they say though, "practise makes perfect"

although ive already broken my diff mount recently so im kinda trying to take it easy.

$$$$ you know ; )

Don't you hate it when you're pulling on someone and they let off?

I used to own a 2000 WRX, the same mods as the one described. I now have an '01 bathurst r . I reckon that in a traffic light grand prix my wrx would probably win. Even if purely becuase it is so easy to launch right every single time. Anyone can launch one and do it time and again. The 7 can still be launched quick, but not as easily and therefore not as reliably. BUT from a roll it would be a different story.

Interestingly I have had a few runs with the bug eyed STI and been absolutely dead even. The STI had no mods, I had intake and exhaust. I guess the extra weight slowed them down alot.

In the 7 I am confident that I could take the STI or the WRX from a role, but so far in the last 4 months I haven't found a single guy willing to run! Same for the HSV's (monaro's/gen 3 V8) I think that the 7 has a much bigger reputation here in Oz than it seems to have in the US. In fact the only runs I have had are with guys in lancers (NOT EVOS) and V6 family cars.

Oh, the runs with the bug eyed STI were in my WRX wagon, and not in my 7.

How about we define a stock WRX as "fast for a grocery getter" and "decent" in the world of performance cars...

i killed a wrx im my FB.......from a red light. wrx mods were intake exhaust and a BOV
just that easy, i put 1-2 cars on him by top of 2nd.

of course it no stock fb, and its nothing special
85gsl 6-port 13b racing beat exhaust and headers.
and a 12A tranny. I have been launching all day at the local autox, so i had my launch down at 3k, i just really destroyed the wrx, and i didn't even make the buzzer go off.

So the how quick is your FB? A WRX like that should run 0-60 in under six seconds no probs. I guess from what you have written that you have beaten him by maybe 1 second to 60? Is that realistic. Not saying it didn't happen just like that, and I have never drive or raced a Fb, so it may just be that I am ignorant?

Gilgamesh, I would be happy to take your word for it (dont need a slip)! Just asking "what'll she do?".
So.....What'll she do?

Maybe you guys get a different IS in the U.S but I wouldnt even bother to run against one in my old WRX. What engine do you get in yours? Ours are either a 2 or 3L neither of which has more powere or torque or less weight than a WRX.....

I had a buddy with a stock-port, stock-carb 12A FB with an RB header and exhaust run a 9.9 in the 1/8.

The slowest WRX I've seen was a wagon with no mods, it ran a 9.5.

/Nothing else to add.

And because you decided to launch and he didn't automatically means that you "pwnt" him. I especially like how you say only off the line. He must have been sitting there minding his own business when you launched on him.
