it would be real close just take him to a road with some turns that would lock the win my friend had an 89 5.0 it was modded but it was still only fast in a strait line

Using the lower hp #s for both cars, 225 for the stang and 146 for the GXL, the lb/hp ratio is 14.2:1 for the stang and 18.5:1 for the GXL. That right there tells me the FC is in a losing battle. Even a stock S4 TII would have a challenge beating the stang with a 15:1 ratio.

It's not the hp that you should be worried about.
It's the torque.
The engine was rated for 300 lb-ft - no FC non-turbo would even come close.
With even drivers, the Mustang should win every time.
Sorry guys, I don't believe you can beat one of these unless the Mustang drive sucked.

a decent running 5.0 mustang should walk away from a stock turbo II...much less a mildly modded NA. 400lb weight difference is not that much when you're looking at 50-75hp (and 100 or more torque) difference.

I think you'd get your *** handed to you repeatedly unless the car has a fouled plug or 2. NA rx7s are fairly slow...hell, mildly modded turbo II's are still barely adequate to take stock v6 FWD maximas from redlights these days...everything on the road has 2 or 300hp and more torque than most rotaries. There are times I'll be out tooling around in my t2 and the middle aged woman in the altima beside me will just apply moderate throttle and I have to give it all it's got to keep up until about 30mph when the turbo wakes up.

However the old 5.0 Mustang I would think would be a great race, even the year 95 and older mustangs were pretty weak too considering its a v8.
Actually the second slowest V8 powered Mustang produced by Ford, was the 215hp 98' Mustang GT with the automatic transmission(what my friend bought in 98 new after he sold his 600hp 5.0 foxbody). They're quite a bit heavier than the fox bodies, and the first years 4.6's arent as easy to mod as the newer ones(or the 5.0's for that matter).

You won't know the outcome until you race. Slower cars have been known to beat faster cars because of difference in driver abilities.

I hope you don't double clutch while racing, while upshifting??

The ONLY times I've ever double clutched were when a syncro in my tranny was going out, and I also rev-matched on top of that to not get that horrible grind... While driving like a grandma.
