i got an 87 gxl my friend has a bone stock 88 mustang its not a GT but i no it has a v8 5.0 i'm guessing he's pushing about 225 hp and i have no idea how much torque but i no it is way more then me he wants to race me i'm usually excited about racing cars but i don't like t mess around with v8's and such because its a v-8 ........ my best friend keeps on telling me he thinks i could beat him cuz he's seen me beat other cars that i should have lost to ... ... these are the mods i got -
lsd , mk1 short shifter , k&n intake with cold air box, and pace setter headers , kyb struts , his stang is bone stock and an automatic but from what i hear is that autos are better with v8s? so do i even have a chance keep in mind i gotta N/a with those mods .. i've practiced on the road i get up to about a little bit over ninety on it .. straight line ... my friend keeps telling me to race him cuz its not as fast as people talk them up to be lol easy to say for him he's got a trans am with a corvette engine lol

well your car weighs in at around 2700 i think, and his closer to 3200, so you have a weight advantage. then you have a handling advantage plus yours is manual, but he has torque. he'd prolly win but it depends on your driving skill and his.
so id suggest you find a curve track, unless your doing this on the street(erm...unsafe anyone) in that case disreguard my statement altogether, assume you'd lose so no one gets killed

yea well i guess all i really can do is just practice get my launch perfect and double clutch perfectly but even if do get a good jump he will end up getting the start i'm so sad I FEEL LIKE I'M FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE =[

If he's really got a stock 5.0 hes pushing somewhere between 300-325 HP. 5.0's were built to outpower the 350 Chevy was using back in the day. So in all out power I would say he's gonna smoke your ass. But his car is front heavy and yours is balanced ALOT better. Plus you have the ability to preload your transmission alot better. All he will be able to do is powerbreak. Plus your shift points are alot higher then in his automatic.

It will be close, but I dont know.

My convertible fox body mustang (auto) bone stock put down 180whp and 198 ft/lbs of torque in the summer of '05

300 to 325 there is no way not in a stock 88 lx its not even a GT but it will still be tough to win i would definately say i'm the underdog ...... but urs only put dow 180 i've never had mine on a dyno

At this point, i think it would depend on the state of repair of both cars and the drivers. The extra power and torque of the 'stang will be partially balanced by the heavier weight, and the rest will be sapped off by the auto trans. In the 80s and early 90s those things were pretty inefficient, and have only gotten worse with age.

220 i generous for an 88 5.0 and never held a candle to the 350 but they were lighter, I am not a ford hater and was a ford tech for 15 years

Back in my N/A days, I raced a fair share of 5.0's. Vert's, 5 speeds, auto's...lots. The outcomes *always* depended on the mustang driver - or if I botched my driving. Other then that, believe it or not they are fairly equal. The most equal being an auto vert (slowest and heaviest).

But with that said, I lost my fair share as well :)

No offense to you, Im not calling you a liar, but I had a completely stock 5.0 in my old '88 fox body and it was pushing 298 rwhp. And that was in an LX body. Nothing special or anything. There is really no difference, that I have seen, between the 5.0 they put in GT's and the ones they didn't. The only difference I ever saw in the models of 5.0 was from the GT model to the police interceptor model.

Well, those cars are heavy and what not too. The new V-6 has 216HP and its 0-60 is only a hair better than the FC's.

I think your cold air intake plus his auto-tranny should put you about even with him. If the 88 is carbuerated then I think you'll beat him without too much trouble.

In 1987, the Mustang received its first redesign in eight years; incorporating both interior and exterior changes. The exterior design was reminiscent of the earlier SVO and gave the car more of an "Aero" look, in keeping with Ford's overall styling direction. This particular Mustang represents the longest run on any platform and the popularity of the Mustang remained high due to its low cost and high performance. The 302 in³ or "5.0" Mustangs, became popular with the aftermarket performance industry. The V6 option was discontinued while the 2.3 L four-cylinder gained fuel injection, leaving only the 2.3 L four cylinder and the 302 in³ V8. Under the newly established Ford SVT division, the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra was offered with the 302 in³ V8 that produced 235 hp (175 kW) and 280 ft·lbf (380 N•m) of torque.

For 1987, the Mustang received E7 heads and a more capable intake manifold. Power ratings jumped to 225 hp and 300 ft·lbs of torque. In 1989, the Mustang's speed density air system was replaced with a mass air system (1988 Mustangs sold in California also had the MAF system). This change slightly reduced factory horsepower, but it made Mustangs much easier to modify. With the mass air system, changes made to the intake, engine, and exhaust system would be recognized and compensated for by the ECU, resulting in a correct air/fuel ratio and optimum power. In 1990, the Mustang celebrated its 25th anniversary with a limited edition of 2,000 special edition cars. Although the anniversary year was technically 1989 1/2, the limited edition was a 1990 model; they all came in jet black. In 1993, Ford switched to cast hypereutectic pistons for all 302 in³ engines and also re-rated the 5.0 GT at 205 hp and 275 ft·lbf of torque. This estimate was more accurate because the previous power ratings were made before the addition of the mass air flow system, a minor revision in the cam, and other various changes. A new Cobra model was introduced with more subdued styling than the GT. The Cobra used Ford's new GT-40 high performance engine equipment, which was rated at a very conservative 235 hp and 280 ft·lbf of torque, that could send a Mustang through the 1/4 mile in 14.5 seconds at just under 100 mph. A Cobra R model was also produced in 1993 that used the same engine as the regular Cobra. It featured larger brakes, Koni shocks and struts, an engine oil cooler, a power steering cooler, and a factory rear seat delete. Since the Cobra R was more race oriented, creature comforts such as air conditioning and a stereo system were not included.

If you actually dyno'd it at 298 rwhp on an accurate dyno you had a truely outstanding 5.0 and definately not the norm.
the police intercepters had the same engine as the GT's and LX's they just had a better cooling system and silicone hoses.

In fact, I think you should be banned for spreading such bullshit.
I don't think you're even a mechanic.

Anyone who has been around these "4.9" engines, knows that the factory 255bhp was overrated.
Those things were dynoing more like 200 - 210 bhp, and the Ford crowd knew this.
The 225 spec was total bullshit.

YOU claiming over 300 from a stock block is total BULLSHIT.

my 86 gxl took a 5.0 foxbody before...maybe he just sucked but I know I'm lacking in the talented driving department so who knows. I had a full exhaust, intake, ported throttle body and no emissions. I bet I was putting 65hp to the wheels on a good day haha ;)

no shit THAT GUY IS FULL OF SHIT everywhere i look it says they only put down 225 stock and 2 websites said ford overexxagerated it when they were marketing them i think its almost equal here i'm going to practice right now so i can go eat a mustang up =]

I'd like to race a 88 5.0 sometime, Ive seen a few of them and revved my car up next to them but none of them raced me.

I have raced a 2000+ trans am and a camaro z28 , both have v8 350's with over 300 hp, you dont want to try racing those trust me...they pulled on me like I pull on a honda civic...it was no contest...and I couldnt even keep up.

However the old 5.0 Mustang I would think would be a great race, even the year 95 and older mustangs were pretty weak too considering its a v8.
