mivec does reduce lag, but its basically VTec for mitsubishi. the Evo makes 270 still, but now its got it all high end also. I believe the old Evos lost some power high end. I dont know why u would think evo 8 has more potential. Same engine but with variable timing. Same stuff.

The VIII is the same as the IX in terms of potential. I think what you mean is that the IX has to toss MIVEC in order to make big power. I think that is only because the tuners don't know how to take advantage of it past 500whp or so.

MIVEC in some Mitsu's is like VTEC, but in the IX it is only the variable valve timing part. It cuts out around ~6krpm since its only purpose is to help spool up and mid range power.

evo 8 does have more potential to make bigger power because it does not have butterfly valves associated with the mivec that the newer ones have... when your making alot of boost, they really are just obstructions. in fact, from what ive seen, AMS removed this on the newer evos when they were trying to make 600+ hp. about 500whp the motor is ussually built up, and all this mivec crap gets the heave-ho. it only slows spool on a large turbo. do you ever see any 500+hp honda with vtec??.. Really im asking? i havent... the only high hp hondas i know personally do not utilize the vtec. they know they are only going to boost above 6k with the large turbos required. it is only useful of a broader power band with similar to stock power levels.

Like I said, all they have to do is remove MIVEC to make bigger power. That doesn't mean that the VIII's have more potential, only that the IX's require an extra step when you want more than 500whp.

He'd tell you he knows what he's doing just before he fucked it up beyond repair.
