94 FD vs. 04 SVT Cobra

A friend of mine recently traded his mustang gt for an svt cobra and just got a few bolt on's and a tune. He is running a catback and H-pipe i think, with a 18psi pulley, intake and an aftercooler. With the ecu and tune he is running he said it should be putting down around 480 rwhp and 480 ft/lbs of torque.

We only got a chance to do one pull and didnt have a camera, but should get some video hopefully soon.

Started off at about 40 mph both in second gear. I do three honks and we both go. He pulls about 1/2 car until i hit boost and stays about 1/2 in front through 2nd. We both shift to third and by mid way through third i am pulling even and beginning to pull ahead. We both shift into 4th for about a second and i shut down about 1/2 car infront at about 100 mph.

The cars we pretty much dead even and we were both pretty happy with the outcome.

My car has a gt40r, stock ported motor, running 12psi.

its crazy how fast those things can get from minimal mods. he is of course running tip top hp for the stock blower @ 18psi ( i dont think they are efficient above 18), and im sure you have more room for boost. of course if he ports it or throws on a wipple and/or nitrous and its a different story. THese are the only mustangs i respect.

Hey Austin. Find out what pulley he has. You won't get 18 psi from an upper pulley only and the stock blower won't really handle it unless its ported. No aftercooler on the car. It has an air to water heat exchanger. Either way sounds like a good run. 03-04 Cobra is the only Mustang ever worth buying in my opinion. Crank that boost too. A gt40 at 12 psi isn't even breaking a sweat. at 15-16 you should pull him much harder.

Alright, have some updated information. Thanks for the corrections Ihor, you can tell I know my mustang stuff My friend has an air to water heat exchanger not an aftercooler like Ihor stated. It has a 2.76 pulley on the supercharger with a Billit Flow Idler Pully Set. He is running 15 psi, not 18 like i thought. He also has an aftermarket throttle body, which i forgot to include in my initial post.

Sorry to mis-inform initially.

ihor, got a question... Theres a guy around my home town that said some pretty unbelievable things about the 03 cobra.. he has pullies running 18psi. stock fuel system, and nitrous. i said "wonder how long that will last." he said that the stock fuel setup is "much better than evreyone thinks." from his mouth, the stock motor, stock blower running 18psi, stock fuel, tuned w/ 100 shot of nitous tuned ing is reliable. he said hes making roughly 650whp. is this true? or can you comment on this guy.. I know the fuel system is fairly strong... but 18 psi and nitrous w/ not even a fuel pump?... sounds like a load of bs.

Stock fuel system has 42lb injectors and duel pumps. Its pretty stout and will supposrt 500 hp easily. Sounds like hes pushing it though. Are you sure he doesn't have a kenne bell boost a pump?

Wow, i was unaware of the dual pumps. he may be upping the wattage on the pumps... although he didnt mention it. those are roughly 450cc injectors... still with 18lbs and 100 shot, they have to be stuck wide open.

Another Cobra question: Do they handle as well as most of the Mustang lovers claim? I know that most are just fanboys, but too many claim them to be one of the best handling cars available, so I have to ask. I've only driven a '99 Cobra and it was just a highway run to 120mph.

Handling isn't spectacular, but I feel it handles at least as well as a 3000gt or a Supra. It is nothing like any other mustang. The entire suspension short of the front control arms is different. Mainly its the weight that hurts it.
