87 TII vs Speed3

So last night I'm headed home from school at about 11pm. Driving up US 1 in Fort Lauderdale. All of the sudden this blue speed 3 and a civic si fly by me but get a red light. At the light the Speed moves to the left lane as to inviting me to get in the middle lane for a 3 way run. I did but I was still not sure if I was in the mood to run. I looked at the speed 3 saw a few gauges including a wideband then the Si revved and a bov went off so now I was really in the mood.

Light turns green and we are out. First gear I'm one car in front of both, when I shifted to second I lost major grip and speed3 gained half a car on me. By the end of second we were bumper to bumper then shifter to third and speed3 gains half a car again but by the end of third I'm half a car ahead. On fourth we were both dead even and had to slam on the break. As to the civic I really don't know what happened to him but I'm guessing he just gave up somewhere in there.

I've never had such a close run, we were pretty much even the entire way. I'm guessing by the end of fourth I would have pulled on him but there was just no space (road was empty but there was a turn ahead). We both agreed that it was a hell of a run and parted ways.

Mods: walbro, hks schroom, 550-720cc, rtek 1.7, apexi n1 single, RB DP. At 10psi

Those MS3's can be made damn quick just for a few hundred bucks. They can easily walk Evo 9's and STi's from a roll with a CAI and DP. Unfortunately those direct injected 2.3's have a problem reaching 400+ whp without blowing up .

Yeah I actually like them. I knew a guy back in Texas that had one somewhat moderately modded and could do mid to low 13's all day.

I have a 2010 Speed3 with only Magnaflow Cat-back, when compared to my '93 FD R1 with only a JDM downpipe, and PFS cat-back (for now), the speed3 is actually a lil bit quicker than the FD, its kinda funny that my daily driver is faster than my summer toy, but that won't be for too long. Plus I average 23mpg with "spirited" driving.

Speed3's biggest issue is the High Pressure Fuel Pump can't keep up with too many mods, but if you upgrade that too, then these things can be made hella quick!! I like the fact that I'm still under warranty, so I ain't screwing around with that car till that's run out.

I'm guessing you both stopped right next to the Sears Plaza on US1 heading North where it Merges with Sunrise, or just before the curve South Bound? North bound it's easier to step on it. South bound you can't really see if there are cars stopped next to the plaza at the light just after the curve.

Now for some fun, personally I like the ramp from 595 to US1 North

Haha that is exactly where we stopped. We started at the first light after the tunnel with empty road and all green.

^that's a good stretch of road there...

I'm David by the way, where do you go to school?

I'm a student at FIU right now, but I live just a bit south of where your race started. Recently picked up a Turbo II which I hope to get back tomorrow from the shop with a fresh rebuilt Street ported engine..

^Well I got the car back...now I'm still in the process of breaking her in. I had to upgrade her injectors because of the port job, and now I need a better fuel pump as well as gauges: boost, EGT, and fuel pressure; also boost controller...I have a Microtech Lt-10 but my stock fuel pump is not keeping up even with tuning...hit me up if you ever need anything, or a good mechanic. I'll pm you my number.

Great story! I can relate as a good friend of mine has a MS3 with every bolt on you can do minus a turbo. That thing is fast as crap and smokes my TII. Heck it beat my friends 1st gen with a TII swap and 260whp.

A MS3 with a few bolt on's shouldn't have trouble getting into the 13's even with street tires. Hell, a stock MS3 can run low low 14's granted it has a good 60.

I'm wondering when the dual pump solution is going to catch on like the GM LBZ/LLY/LM6 diesels. Currently there are upgrade options moving the pump from the 400 range to the 550, but why not add 400 to an existing 400, the HPFP on the LLYs are cam shaft driven, but the 2nd one can be belt driven! then split the fuel rail duty to half the injectors. I'm hoping to convince my customer to upgrade his ms3(using dual pumps), by beating him in a turbo 8 .
