86 base VS 2000 Prelude

~10 PM in the middle of nowhere (clarksville, md) my friend (2000 Prelude) decided we should line up for a drag. Since it was kinda late and there wasn't a car around for miles, I agreed.

My Mods(At the time):
Intake (K&N)
Minor Weight Reduction

(Also, I had a busted oil seal & 5th and 6th ports were frozen shut)

His Mods:
Ricer wing
Intake (AEM)
Rebuilt motor

Short story shorter, I had him as soon as I hit second gear. He started to catch up while I was around 4500 RPM, but as soon as I got to 3rd, it was all over. The thing is, he's challenged me to a rematch! Good news for him that my car has just had an engine swap (WITH MAJOR HELP FROM TOFUBALL- I REALLY OWE HIM ONE) with perfect seals and those ramped air inserts for the aux ports from pineapple racing. We'll see if I can crush him in 2nd this time around. >

Edited for spelling.

He must suck at driving, or it's an automatic if an 86 base took it.

Preludes can actually be pretty quick if they're driven properly...I call BS or he was a shitty driver as well.

I've had a couple run ins with different 5th gen Preludes and the result was always the same. I once took one in my 140hp Celica GT. It was only by my front fender, but a win's a win. When I got my 180hp GTS I took one by several car lengths, and that was with the big heavy rice wheels that came on the car(see sig). I'm thinking the Prelude is either hard to drive, or just aren't as fast as the power numbers would suggest. Then again, they weigh 3000lbs. I believe he could have won with an 86 base. The power of the car does not always determine the speed or the driving ability behind the wheel.

I say BS, a prelude w/ BPU's. A base N/A w/ 5th & 6th ports shut would get walked by stock civics. Prelude have more power and less wieght.

NO WAY an 86 base model with 6port shut beat the prelude. I have a friend with a 99' and were both about the same driving and he rapes all of my boys and me everytime we race or just mess around...he musta been just like hitting vtec and letting off...cause theres no way a basically stock 86er can beat that car..unless like i said, no vtec..lol

I raced a 2000 Prelude from a dig that was pushing 200 hp, against my sliglhtly modded FB, I was pushing probably around 150 hp so I figured the power/weight ratio was very similar so it should be a close race. I was wrong. I only took him on the launch because of his fwd. As soon as I shifted into 2nd gear he walked away. We raced to about 70 mph.

So based on that, your story is, let's just say, unlikely.

yeah a 90 model prelude without v-tec was fast enough to walk all over a 98 civic

i got him by about half a car length but i couldn't go to second because second grinded when shifting fast

i'd hate to see what a 2000 prelude would have done to me since a 90 did so well

so i think he probably was just messing with you, or he didn't know how to drive

What does a stock '86 Base make to the wheels? Last I checked it wasn't anywhere close to 170whp. That's what a 5th gen Prelude puts down stock. Of course the Prelude does weigh 300lbs more, but you'll still need to be much better than stock to keep up with one.

Well...Last night i just raced my friends 96 prelude. And I have a 89 N/A, and mines bone stock. All though he claimed that his was too..but im not too sure. We started off pretty even, but once i hit second he was already a car in front of me. After third he was about 2 1/2 cars in front of me.
So im not too sure about an 86 base beating a 2000 prelude?? Especially since he had a V-Tech.

VTEC 4th gen Preludes are little faster than the 5th gens because they have the same motor and weigh a little less.
