3000GT VR-4 vs. Ferrari F355

I figured you guys would like this story..

I ran into a black F355 GTS on the highway (80W) in PA friday night. Beautiful car. Didn't think he was gonna want to roll but to my surprise he was more than willing.

First run, about 65mph, I'm in third next to him, I see his car lurch as he downshifts... and I hit it right as he does. I immediately pull and continue to pull a car and a half or so until near the top of third (~100mph) when we come up to traffic.

Next run, he slows to 50 with me, I have it in second waiting for him to floor it because I'm sure he's never heard of the whole 3 honk thing. The second I hear him floor it, I hit it, and pull 2 cars or so until again the top of third.

We lined up 2 more times for 50mph punches... same outcome every time. Such an amazing car, and a very nice guy. After our runs he pulled next to me, gave me a big thumbs up with a huge smile on his face, and then paced me about 100ft behind for the next hour or so of highway driving, made sure we were driving right together.

Sure put a smile on my face, made my whole night. Wish I could have a vid for you guys, but I don't have a video camera.

My mods are:

intake
3" downpipe
3" testpipe
MBC @ 15lbs
half tank 94 octane
girlfriend in car, no back seats, no spare or jack.

Nice kill. How much do you think you're pushing to the wheels?

With those mods I guess he should be about 300awhp, give or take 10 or so. The downpipe is a huge restriction stock, and it is heavy. The exhaust, well the stock one is good for stock turbos, but is really heavy so if he has a similar setup to an ATR he may have saved about 40lbs.

Also, with his weight reduction he could be about 3400-3500lbs.

My question is what year is the vr4. The 5 speed would have a bit more difficult time doing that as the gearing is long. The 6 speed spools up fast and is better geared for that speeds.

With the race ending about 100mph, the ferrari wouldn't have an chance to use its top end, gearing, better aero and weight advantage to walk away.

Nice one, I know a guy with a Vr-4 who just swapped his turbos out. He ran a 13.00 on the stock turbo's. He still can't seem to get into the twelves tho.

Yep that's all about right. I have a '94, so it's a 6-speed. 3rd gear is great for highway pulls (it pulls hard from 70-110); I would have liked to have taken it through 4th and seen if he would have started coming back... but 4th tops out near 150 and that would have been damn fast for that little crappy highway.

I have read that the F355 GTS traps 112... so I'm pretty impressed that my anemic pig from japan could pull it through 3rd.

oh, and that jack saved like 10 lbs!! haha...

I dont know, those 300hp as you put it seems kinda anemic for a heavy car. Then again, just cause the F355 runs 12s on paper doesnt mean everyone driving one can get those #s out of it.
Its funny that you mention weight reduction and its still at 3500 lbs...FAT ***! LOL

The only way a 355 runs 12's in the 1/4 is if the hand of god himself is pushing it. 355 are severly overrated, and most see mid 13's. They are a track car, not a drag car.

And 300whp is pretty stout compared to a lot of cars. Especially from a dig.

For such an expensive car, I would expect at least high 12s...I mean it is a hair under 3k lbs, makes pretty decent power(375bhp - what is in american) but i guess since its geared for high speeds it hurts their 1/4 mile times. Oh well, guess if you have the xtra $120k...lol

Not to be a dick or anything but putting down 300 horses and weighing around 3500 lbs, 3kgt is running 13s also, isnt it??? Is it setup for drag racing? were they at the drag strip? on a roll i would think the heavier car would loose...again gearing might be the difference here.
Everyone of us knows that given an endless straight, we would loose out to all these exotics cause while we may kill them up to 160 mph, they will keep going way past that. Again, gearing!

The 355 in some mags runs 12.9 at around 109-112, and generally SERIOUSLY overrated. It has some long gears and better aero, but on a street launch, and with most normal exotic owners who don't know how to drive, or baby the car.....most will lose to a lesser car with a good street setup (there are a lot that beat on their cars, but a lot that don't. I feel most don't though).

And 300awhp is good for mid-high 12's in a 3kgt at 3500lbs. Most likely high 12's though. Stock most 2nd gens run around 13.5-13.8 with an average driver at 260awhp and 3750lbs. 40whp and 250lbs is a good chunk of power and weight, especially when racing a guy who probably doesn't want to break his car.

Magazines don't publish their 60' times when they put up quarter mile times and traps. If they did, we would know the F355 story to another degree of detail. However, I have never driven one, let alone at the track, so I only know what a magazine puts in front of me.

Something I do know, however, is that my VR-4 walked one in a mostly third gear pull (50-100) on the highway. This is where high trap speeds come from. An F355 trapping 112 but only running high 12s? I believe it - street tires, decent but not extreme launch. Then second and third take it to 112 before it crosses the 1320. Conversely, if a VR-4 traps 112, with a good launch, you are looking at mid-low 12 second ETs (re: 3/S Quicklist).

So you can see why I'm happy with this kill - pulling a car trapping 112 with a higher ET through the top of second and all of third is much harder than pulling a car trapping lower with a lower ET.

As far as how hard the guy in the Ferrari was pushing... I can only go from what I saw. I saw his car lurch as he downshifted, and I heard him go WOT when I hit it, and not let off. He was impressed enough to give me a thumbs up, which I don't think someone would do if they were only giving 50%. I wouldn't. But take what you will out of it, I'm not trying to preach... just stating the facts. Malice, I'm impressed at the accuracy of your knowledge, not something you see every day with the 3/S... former owner?

Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it has to be super fast. Don't forget the 355 is 10 years old! It is "only" 375HP. However, it looks better than 99% of cars ever built and sounds better too

Nice kills! And it's nice that he wasn't a total **** *** like most owners are.

Nice kill! The 3000GT was my absolute first love. I wanted it before I wanted any other sports car when I was like 10, lol. Do you have the hard top convertible model by any chance?

I believe you...eventhough i've never raced a 3k gt. Just wouldnt think you would pull on it. But hey, I have run other cars which on paper should be faster and beat them quite easily.

BTW, If I had spent that much money on a car, it better be a very low flying jet!!! lol

yeah not suprised you beat him on a highway pull. My Dad had a 355 drop top and it was the sweetest car on the street. Might have been a different race if the owner of the car was not the one driving it. Only reason I say that is this owner probably was alot like my father, he didn't want to beat the **** out of his $132,000 dollar car that needs a $2000 dollar valve tune every 2-3k miles. These cars are not straight line machines, they are ***** getting toys that tell girls you have the cash and tell guys to grab their chick tight and not let any eye contact as you valet the thing like you don't even care you are giving the keys to some 16 year old kid. Oh yeah and they handle great.

When my buddy had stock turbos and similar mods on his '95 VR-4 he ran a 13.3@106 with the stock clutch not really holding a good launch.
