I tow my FB with race gear on a flatbed with a 2000 Ranger 3.0 automatic. If you're not in a rush, it tows just fine. You can easily go 70 on normal roads. It pulls the mountian passes at around 45. The down side is it doesn't stop. Period. You have to plan waaaayyyyy ahead. The trailer I use has no brakes which makes it worse. I just picked up a trailer with brakes that I'll start using.
I use that truck because I'm limited on parking space and I use it as a daily driver. It gets good mileage and is very reliable.
My buddy has a HUGE dually crew cab Ford 350 diesel. I have never seen a better tow rig that that. I totally belive that one should get the biggest tow rig that fits their budget.
I absolutely belive that ABS is a total must have. I don't have it and I really regret it. It's very common for the front wheels to lock up on a loaded tow rig. Oh... make sure it's ABS on all 4 wheels!

I know this subject hasn't had much activity in a couple of weeks, but I was wondering if my stock 88 rx7 could tow a pretty light boat, it is 18' but it only weighs about 800lbs with trailer. All I would be towing it to is the boat ramp near my house >3mi away. I would have to go up a kinda steep grade pulling my boat out of the water at the end of the day.

Im looking at getting a VW Transporter for towing my FD to events this coming year. Not sure if it is called a transporter in the US but its got a 2.5 Turbo Diesel Engine , 5 speed manual gear box , Disc Brakes and ABS all round and is rated to tow 4500lb and will seat 7 although Ill probably take the seats out the back.
Im considering one as I need it to be my daily driver as well and I should be able to crash in the back at shows and events.
Does anyone else use one of these and how do they rate them.

I am a big believer in the "overkill" strategy: I tow with a '94 Hummer H1. It has a 6.5 litre diesel with aftermarket Banks turbo and the stock (automatic) tranny. I used to tow my RX7 with a V6 Explorer, but it wasn't easy, even though I have a lightweight aluminum open trailer. I keep my car in a rural location (very rough dirt road) and once I got *really* stuck with Explorer. Never again!

there won't be any water in the bilge, at this point i'm thinking of getting a small $700 truck for just that. The hard part about that idea is that i'm poor, and in FL you have to have insurance on every vehicle you own and I can barely afford to insure my rx. And replacing my rx7 with a truck is out of the question.

We tow with a 1999 GMC Yukon (regular size 4-door, non-XL/Suburban model) (5.7L gas) outfitted with an electric trailer brake controller.
This tows our open deck steel trailer (with hydraulic beavertail), FC, 2 extra sets of wheels/tires, tools, ez-ups, etc etc etc, and then we sleep in the back at the track (there is enough room for a queen sized air mattress in it with the seats down). The SUV arrangement has worked out well for us, and we can store bits and pieces in it as well if we don't feel like unpacking immediately after getting home.
