At the '12 hours of the point' last June, a camera crew was following the BMW team of Alfred DuPont and some other top drivers and the show is going to air on Speed Channel. At this race, the BMW team needed a fuel hose, and since my dad knows the one guy, he asked my dad for one. The camera crew interviewed my dad about how racers help out other racers all the time, so he might be shown sometime during the show. But I believe its the first time Summit is on TV, and might show some good race shots, maybe some night shots of the 12 hour. This is airing....

It was ok...the team they were following isn't what I would call a "grassroots" effort. Next year they should follow a Spec 7 team.

There was actually an interview with your dad. Exciting stuff.

The team Speed Channel was following was a Porsche 944 Turbo racer? Looks like Summit Point finally got some new asphalt, since my last MADS there in 1999 (April).

 

Doesn't look new to me! When I walk the track after the racing day is over, you can really see how beat the pavement is, especially where the concrete buts up against pavement in the entrance to turn 1.

 

I remember that track being very bumpy...almost as bumpy as IRP LOL

 

Yes, very good show. It is interesting to see Summit Main on TV, as I have never personally seen any of Summit's tracks on TV before. Also, it is good to see the regional club racers getting televised - good for the sport no doubt.

 

Heck, you can see how dilapidated the pavement on Summit Main is just by driving the course! You don't have to look very close.

 

I've spent the last three years racing a shifter kart at Summit Point...it's defnitely still bumpy. I do hear that since repaving it several years ago it's gotten better though.

I ran one of the first events after they repaved the track (back in late 99, I think?). Some of the transitions onto concrete were at least 1/2 inch high! In particular, I remember the first patch in turn 5 being a very hard hit, and it always made the car want to unsettle (and that's a bad place for funny stuff). Now, those patches in turn 5 are much smoother, as the concrete has settled quite a bit. But now that the concrete has had time to settle, there are seams and ridges forming in the asphalt in places.

Must be a full-time job trying to keep the concrete and asphalt playing together nicely...

 

Yep that exactly right. After it settled it was OK for a little bit. And yes turn 5 is a very bad place for surprises. I saw during the show, someone flipped down the chute... now THAT must have been scary. Theres only maybe 10-15 feet to the left of the track, even AFTER they made it wider upon the superbike driver's request.
