I'll sell ya a Hewland ST 5 speed (non sequential/no clutch) dog box, with a drop
gear, and many (25) gear sets, dog rings, shift forks, and other spares. With the flywheel, 4 1/2" clutch, and bellhousing for $23K (less than the cost of new). Oh yea, I'll throw in the rest of the car for free. |
A real sequential racing gear box is going to cost serious money. $22,000 is not out of line for the cost for a sequential box; X-Trac will cost $50,000. Trying to save money by buying a used racing gear box is always a risky proposition, unless you include the cost of immediately rebuilding it in your budget. If you really want speed for your car - then the money should be spent elsewhere on your car. Most racers are happy just making the jump from a street transmission to a heavy duty racing dog ring un-synchronized tranny - which are great for racing and horrible for street use.

I was just looking at the G-Force site yesterday. They list the GF5R with a V-gate shifter ('merican for sequential) for around $6000-$7000. They even list adapter plates at the botteom of the page for $350 for Turbo II, $550 for 3rd gen. Probably the cheapest option for a solid road race box available.

Isn't a V-gate for upshifts only (more or less) and basically only good for drag racing?

I'm pretty sure it's set up so that you just push and pull it back and forth to upshift and you have to pull the handle up or something to downshift, so it'll be hard to use in road racing.

I use a GF-5R with an H-gate shifter in my peripheral ported 13B road racer. Total cost of tranny with Magnesium case, the shifter and all the adapters, and custom driveshift and yokes ended up costing about $6500 several years ago. This thing is bullet proof, it was built to withstand big block V-8 engine drag racing. The upshifts are lightning fast; the faster you pull the shifter, the smoother and faster it shifts. Down shifting a dog ring box is tricky; whether sequential or not you will hear some crunching if the revs are not closely matched. This tranny is big - you will probably have to widen your tunnel for it like I did on my first gen. Since I put that tranny in a few years ago, I have not lost a road race because of transmission problems.
I believe the V-gate shifter is setup for drag racing up shifting only; that is why I use the horizontal gate shifter for road racing. The Long shifters (which is G-Force parent company) are one of the top favorite Nascar shifters, the Long shifter is even on Jerrico trannys. If you are cheap and just want to brag that you have a sequential shifter, then get yourself a motorcycle :) |

Pfitzner Performance Gear sets is a place that I am going to order my dogbox. It is not sequential though. My friend has their drift/drag gear sets for his s13.5. The gears are amazing.

They do sell sequential gearboxes and normal dogboxes. I just orderd there modified Tremec TKO600 dogbox. That will suit my needs more then enough. U also have a company called sellholm in sweden that makes sequential gearboxes that fit the FD bellhousing. They are about 12 0000 USD with todays exchange rate. JT |

Which Saenz Box was it? The 840 seems a little small for a turbo setup.
