safety measures/tips for filling a fuel cell through the hatch
Im running a 16 gallon fuel cell in the back of my 1st gen. I modified it to use the existing fuel door/filler, but I have been having problems filling the tank completely and I sprung a small leak also which was difficult to fix.
Im thinking of getting a new cell (only 200) and then just filling it through the hatch.
my questions are, what can I do to help increase saftey as far as filling though the hatch.
I know that the filler door on the tank has to be grounded, I did that, but anything else I should know.
the other problem is, gas stations might have a problem with me filling inside a car.

Most all race series make you put a metal bulkhead (dividing wall) between the fuel cell and the driver. You cannot have the fuel filler cap in the same compartment that you are in!
My road race car is setup with the cell located roughly where the spare tire used to be. To meet the safety rule, I built an aluminum box in the rear of the car. Front edge is just in front of the shock towers, all the way across. Sheet metal top all the way to the back edge of the car. It has a roughly 16x16" square hatch lid that I remove, (after I open the lexan rear hatch window) to access the fuel filler cap on top of the cell. I made an extension funnel out of 1-1/2" PVC pipe to make it easy to pour from a 5 gallon can into the funnel, and the long pipe directs it into the fuel cell, without spilling inside the fuel cell compartment.
