Has anybody used their harness with the new SMART technology?

"S.M.A.R.T.™ (Sensor Modulated Automatic Restraint Technology) represents the most advanced design in restraint systems today. The system features a unique 'thinking' electro-sensor which constantly monitors abnormal movement and force inside the vehicle while in motion. During normal driving conditions, the Autocontrol's sensor allows the inertia reel to 'relax', enabling occupants to move more comfortably and freely in their harnessbelts. But, if the electro-sensor detects rapid acceleration or deceleration, a high G-force turn, quick side movement or inclines over 25 degrees, it will INSTANTLY lock the inertia reel and secure occupants in their seats - the safest possible position in a collision. That's what www.soloperformance.com says about the Autocontrol II harness, and I'm just curious if anyone has had any issues (i.e. it sucks and doesn't work; it's dangerous and won't hold you, etc.) with this new system. It seems like a sound idea, just looking for some feedback. Thanks.

this is exactly how most OEM seatbelt retractors work. Schroth is a quality company and it should work as advertised, but this would not be a legal harness for a race car. this looks like a street system meant to look like a race harness.

 

as long as it'd pass at open track days or a local autox, it'd be fine with me. if it does its job right it should clamp up and hold the driver in place just as any racing harness would.

 

That's what the marketdroids had to say about it I bet, and the website just copied it. I don't trust those 4-pt harnesses because there is no sub belt. They make some sort of claim about an anti-submarine technology, but I don't buy it. Without a sub belt, the shoulder harnesses pull the lap belt up across your abdomen, and that's bad. You want it across your thighs. My advice is to put in a real SFI-rated 5-point and retain the stock belts for street use. You can get eyebolts to screw into the stock mounts and then clip the harness to them.

 

Gene is correct the smart belt system will not hold you in the seat like a real hraness. without the sub belt the lap belt will creep up in a head on accident. be careful with the race harness if you don't have a roll bar or cage though. the schroth setup look like it was designed to be DOT legal so you could use it on the street as well as open track events, but it will work similair to an OEM setup. belts would be loose(or at least be free to move around) until the system was tripped then the retractor would lock up.

 

well my auto-lock OEM belt on the driver's side is fooked so i figured i'd keep it in just for looks, but use something like this on a day-to-day basis. however, the comments about the belt creeping up around my abdomen makes me nervous. anybody know where i can get replacement seatbelt parts? i could find them at mazdatrix.
