My ICSCC ST FC3S Race car build
It has been in the works for quite awhile now, and I've posted a lot of questions but finally have some time while I watch the Saint's/49'ers game to post up a build thread. I've been posting some upates on Speedhunters, but work has progressed slowly through 2011 so I didn't update very much.
I am building the car for both Time Attack/Solo Sprint, as well as the ICSCC Sport Touring rules, which is based around a 1:10 power to weight ratio. The chassis I started with was a pretty tired 1988 GX base, had no sunroof which gave me more headroom, and less weight up top. |

Car was stored on top of a storage container for a year before I found it. Picked it up for $200 and brought it home. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/1.jpg Had some sweet seat covers http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/2.jpg And stickers http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/RX7build_01.jpg Also picked up a donor car, for suspension, 5 lug, S5 engine, and some other bits. I had just had laser eye surgery when I needed to tear apart the S5, and pull the S4 engine, so I asked the local Rotary boys to come and help, and they had the car apart in an hour or so and helped me pull the other engine in exchange for a few free parts. |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/RX7build_08.jpg
Spent a bunch of time tearing into the car and stripping it down to the bare shell. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/RX7build_09.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/RX7build_06.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/RX7build_05.jpg Once it was stripped down it was time to repair the bit of rust it had and get the roll cage in. |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/09_12_16_016sh.jpg
Got the interior stripped down, used dry ice to help freeze the stick sound deadening out and a heat gun to scrape the rest out. Once that was done, was time to stitch weld the chassis. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage1.jpg Had to strip out all the seam sealer which is a bitch of a job, but with a chassis over 20 years old, worth it IMO. |

Went out to my friend Colin's shop and we built ourselves a hydraulic tubing bender and started on the cage. The bender was hooked up to his forklift, so you could use the forklift controls to control the bender, pretty slick actually.
|
Cage turned out pretty well. Used 1.75" 0.095" wall DOM, but looking back I may have used 1.625" next time.
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage2.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage3.jpg Being 6'4" I need all the headroom I could get, so the cage was tucked up as far as possible http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage4.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage5.jpg Also made sure the A-pillar bars were in line with my line of sight with the a-pillars, giving me the best outward visibility. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage6.jpg Nascar style bars on the drivers side http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage7.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/cage8.jpg X-bars on the passenger side |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/door_sh.jpg
Gutted and lightened the doors, made my own brackets for the stock inner door handles. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/gusset2.jpg Bought some bolt-through dimple dies and made myself some gussets for the cage since the rules for my class allow any points of attachment for the cages. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/gusset3.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/gusset1.jpg Gutted my hatch too. Needs lexan next. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/10_05_31_002.jpg |
Build myself some basic rotisserie stands so I could rotate the car and access the bottom easily to clean it up and stitch weld it.
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/10_05_31_003.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/10_05_31_004.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/10_05_31_005.jpg Then Dave (docholiday) helped me clean up the bottom of the car and remove 22 years of gunk. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/10_05_31_006.jpg Also built a custom strut brace, but will re-make it out of aluminum. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/s...ace_04.jpg.JPG |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/steeringrack.jpg
Flyin Miata helped me re-build my steering rack and de-power it. This is the S5 rack so its the perfect ratio for de-powering. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/seatbox_07.jpg.jpg Realized I was still too tall with my Sabelt Taurus seat, so docholiday built me a drop box and we welded it in. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/seatbox_12.jpg.jpg Not bad for a tall dude... |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_010.jpg
Got my balance bar and dual MC's for the brake adjustment system. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_011.jpg Dave/docholiday helping me get the pedal box modified so I can run the dual MC setup. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/IMG_0840.jpg Made a new mounting hole from guidance from a few of you guys, helping the pedal ratio for better brake feel with the manual brakes. |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/IMG_0585.jpg
Our cat Juicy in my test seat... Picked up a set of 17x8 BBS RS's in decent shape. Bought some new lips for them so time to rebuilt the wheels. Had to bake them first (wife loved that part) http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/bbs_rs_01.jpg Get them apart... http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/bbs_rs_03.jpg Re-painted the centers and get them back together. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/bbs_rs_23.jpg Lookin good! http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_001.jpg |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_006.jpg
Awesome looking Pettit Trak-Pro Race spec coilovers. Can't wait to get these mounted. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/mirrors_11.jpg.jpg Got my daughter to paint my side mirrors. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_016.jpg Yep, they are pink. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_017.jpg AWR 2 piece rotors http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_018.jpg AWR brake ducts http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_022.jpg Got the bottom sealed up http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/SH/11.02.08_026.jpg Momo dished wheel. |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/11_0...1.3.31_001.jpg
Trimmed the dash to fit with the cage and dyed it black. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/11_0...1.3.31_003.jpg Painted a few of the suspension members http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/11_0...1.3.31_009.jpg JDM TII trans and Mazdatrix short shifter with an extension I made. |
Looks great! Takes a patient man to do all that stitch welding.
Is that cat a Savannah? |
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/12_0..._01_08_001.jpg
Dave and I machined some upper diff mounts. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/12_0..._01_08_002.jpg And we got the car fully sealed up with epoxy primer. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/12_0..._01_08_003.jpg The cat is a bengal, and she is rad. She attacks our 95lb doberman all the time. |
Also did a few concept renders to see how I thought it would look when I'm done. Have some new fender designs, and a different front bumper/headlight treatment now. If I get some time I'll update them.
http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Renders/fc3s.63_2.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Renders/fc3s.64.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Rend...s_white.19.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Rend...s_white.20.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Rend...s_white.28.jpg http://www.jarrettracing.ca/RX7/Rend...s_white.29.jpg Also decided on going black. Every vehicle I've owned/own is black... even the Fiat 500 I will be restoring will be black. |
Awesome. Keep us posted please on the build. Subscribed...
|
I was following the build on Speedhunters. Glad to see it up over here.
|
Very nice, well thought out track car. Can't wait to see some more updates!
|
Just stumbled across your build, looks like the beginnings of a great racecar except for the pink mirrors :gay:. All kidding aside you're off to a great start!
|
yes! excellent choice of wheels, i'm actually looking for some donors myself. what were the before and after widths, and offsets if you don't mind me asking, and what size lip did you add.
I've also been following on speedhunters. Looks like it's going to be amazing. |
Thanks BigAl, been watching yours closely too, can't wait to see it all finished.
Wheels were 8" wide with a 1" lip stock, put on a 3.5" lip and are now 11.5" wide. However, ST only allows 10" wheels in competition, so these may become my Time Attack wheels and get some RPF01's for ST. |
Awesome work so far, ive been following this build on speedhunters and cant believe that i almost forgot about it, lol, i guess its been alittle while.. beautiful car/build, and i cant wait to see more done
im subscribing |
I love the renderings, the car is going to look fantastic.
Good luck with the build. Richard |
Subscribed!! Great build. I think I'm inspired to build a rotisserie myself for my other project.
|
Saw this on Speedhunters and was bummed I haven't seen any updates, glad I found this thread! Keep up the good work, I'm building my FC on a rotisserie too :icon_tup:
|
Any updates?
Looking for a little motivation and inspiration! |
I need more of this please.
|
Hey guys, nice to see some interest. Been getting lots of little things done, will try to get some more pictures tonight, I'm really lazy when it comes to transferring pictures from my camera to the computer it seems...
|
great job! Good to see someone local building a nice car.
What will you be doing for an engine ? The reason i ask is I have a few laying around. wouter |
I was also following it on speed hunters. Glad it's still in the works.
|
Wouter, planning on running a 13b PP. Have most of the parts, just need some time to get crackin on it. What do you have lying around, and how is your car now, my buddy Dave and I were in the stands right in front of where you went off last year into the concrete barrier at Mission, raw deal.
Yeah still in the works, might get one or two more posts on Speedhunters, but they are changing their format a fair bit, so need to get something good to show on there first. |

Finally got the whole chassis primed, used some pretty stout epoxy primer, shit sticks to EVERYTHING. So glad to not have a salmon coloured 7 in the garage now. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/rx7/12_0..._03_21_001.jpg Also have the whole underside, wheel wells, and engine bay painted. Wheel wells I did with rubberized undercoating, the rest is a PPG jet black. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/rx7/12_0..._03_21_004.jpg Most of the front suspension is on. I have the MMR speedway style sway bar which requires a very different mounting method, but once that is done the front suspension is good to go. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/rx7/12_03_21/coils.jpg Pettit Racing coils, double adjustable ones, I believe these are one of the first sets for an FC. Interested to see how the heavy spring rates work out on track, 15kg/12kg. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/rx7/12_0..._03_22_013.jpg Got one of the wheels on with a 275 Continental slick, pretty wide :D Going to need to make some pretty wide fenders. http://www.jarrettracing.ca/rx7/12_0..._03_22_009.jpg Also starting to get the rear end together. My buddy Dave and I made some rear diff bushings out of UHMW, fit really well. Next up is a front diff mount out of aluminum and UHMW. I'll try to be better about getting pictures of everything, and getting my ass into gear. The ST season is starting soon! |
My car wasn't too bad as the chassis was okay. I rewired the car after the crash and we came back to win ccgp last year.
I am rebuilding a factory IMSA tubeframe mx6/rx7 that ran Daytona and Sebring in 1997. It was crashed in 2011 at the Mitty. There's a video on youtube showing the car running strong. It came with a 13b PP with slide valve injection, Motec ECU, AJR built , quarter master clutch, etc. I will be running my 20b turbo in this car one day. |

Any chance you have some specific pictures of the MMR speedway style end links? I inherited a speedway bar, ends, brass bushings etc with a chassis I bought but it had never been installed and I didn't any end links or hardware on how it connected to the car. I've heard that the installation requires some modification of stock bits (cutting?) but I've never seen anyone with them actually installed.
mounts like this: http://www.mazdatrix.com/pictures/fa.../ep120502a.jpg http://www.mazdatrix.com/pictures/fa.../ep01063cb.jpg Contact Tony@AWR, I'm sure he'll set you up with all the parts you need to install it. |
@eage8 - Thanks for the pics! First time I've seen how that's done. As I get a bit closer to getting the car on the track I'll give AWR a call for the mounting brackets and the spherical joints.
|
any updates ?
|
Glad to see your FC is coming along nicely, been following it since the beginning. Working on my own right now while she's down for rebuild. Keep up the great work and good luck.
|
I need to get some updates! Just about finished painting the chassis, of which I absolutely hate doing. Painting is such a messy, time consuming, and tiring job, especially without a downdraft booth. Next car will be painted by someone else, or outside for sure.
Started building my intake manifold for the peripheral port, and getting the gear I need to do the porting and parts I'll need on my mill/lathe. Going to make my own injector bungs and some new throttle butterflies I think. I think I'm going to find a bigger set of front brakes as well, lost a couple of auctions on some Wilwood and AP 6 piston brakes for the front, and then I want to run the 4 piston stock mazda units in the rear. I have been doing a fair bit of side work which is why this project has stalled. Custom exhausts, roll cages, etc.. I'll get some pictures up soon now that I'm back to a somewhat regular routine! |
If I were closer I'd come paint it for you
|
I Really like this build - subscribed.
Makes my spring rates and Tein SS look a little meh! |
Got the rear suspension in with the new parts Dave (docholiday) and I have been developing. Some pics of the rear subframe and then it installed:

Next up is getting the fuel cell in. Plumbing the brake lines and the dual master cylinders.
Pretty stoked on the progress lately. Feels like a car! |
http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1jgFi.jpg
Machined down the stock momo hub so I could get the wheel just far enough away to fit my long arms. http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1jgGb.jpg http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1jgGy.jpg http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1bZs1.jpg Capped off the front of the frame rails. Will mount the splitter here probably. http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1bZra.jpg Seat mounts are triangulated and stiff enough now to not need a back brace for the seat. http://static.ow.ly/photos/normal/1bgfO.jpg This will become my lower/front control arms. Probably do a set for Dave's car too. |
Here are a few of the parts we've developed for this car. All made from american made rod ends, 7075 aluminum, and hardware.

Any chance you've got more pictures of that front diff mount? Also any plans for selling them?
