Hello all and Merry Christmas. I am wondering what is the lightest battery for the fd? Relocation is a option as from seats back is stripped. I have not had it corner weighted yet but plan to. Just another half-*** racer looking to gain hp by reducing weight.

 

I've seen several people use lawn & garden tractor type batteries underhood, to clear a larger intercooler (FD).

I've also seen several other people (non FD) use a wheelchair battery bolted to the floor in front of the passenger seat. Light, sealed well for indoor use, and easy access when you can't start the car because you only get one try, maybe two, before the battery won't crank the engine fast enough any more.

 

I use a Duralast Miata Battery, 22lbs.

Or Better Yet Buy A Cf Trunk From Pettit ($230+ $60 For The Lightweight Arclyc Glass) And Relocate The Battery.

 

I have a freind who have been running a jetsky battery for two years without problems, and it is very light 11 lbs or so.

 

Odyssey, sealed, light, good CCA range, shelf life over 2 years, can be jumped 100s of times without failure. Only thing I wouldn't use it for is a car with a huge car stereo, great for race and storing.

 

^ YOUR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. But what people dont understand is that these little small lightweight batteries was intended to be for track & race perposes only. I hear all my friends say. (oh you got that battery. I hated it this battery thinks, blah blah blah blah. #1 this is not for these lowrider cars with all these big sterio systems and loud 12 in subwoffers with big 13in speakers. cause the batterys will drain so quickly you wont be able to get home. Second if you want to use your radio, unless the car is sitting for only 10 minutes then turn the car on and ride around and listen to the radio. So if you hear those bad stories this is the truth cause i have one and i love it. i listen to my music in my car but not for that long if the car is turned off. when you put your emergency lights on it wont but your alarm system will soon.

2nd vote for Oddessey battery (14-16lbs). It starts everytime... just doesn't have a huge reserve.

The one in my watch. J/k Oddessy are not the lightest, but my friends and customers that run them have never hand any problems starting.

 

We have used Total Power's dry-cell batteries for a few years now in the AI and AIX cars, my personal autocross and street cars, and I will put another one in the GTUs when it comes back next week. They're not the lightest nor the cheapest, but I have never had a problem with them at all. They also have quite a bit more "juice" than some other motorcycle-type batteries I have used in the past on some other racecars.... the basic model has over 1200 cca's , weighs only 23lbs, and is easily mountable...the next step up is the size of a group 51 battery (stock small Honda auto) and has over 1500 cca's, that's a lot of power! Long reserve as well. I'll post some pics if I can.

I know a yellow top weighs a SHITLOAD. Considerably heavier than your normal stock battery.

 

The question is which battery has the best performance per weight?

Btw if you use your car for racing. I highly recommend a gel/sealed battery. The FC underhood temperatures are higher than any boinger car I have ever come across. You can tell it was a concern since mazda decided to duct fresh air to the battery box.

The FD doesn't have that, alteast i don't think they do. I know of 5 FDs that have had their battery explode on the track eiter racing or lapping. When acid goes every where you can kiss anything that is plastic and or shiney metal good buy.

 

FYI: the yellow top 51R battery is 26 lbs.
the lightest red top is 33.1 lbs. The heaviest is 38.8 lbs.

I am using one of these.
11.5 lbs. and haven't had many problems with it.
I have a drain somewhere, but that isnt the batterys fault.
